I'm about to mourn the imminent demise of my much beloved laptop :cry::cry:

Last night I had a message come up saying that my lappy was infected with spyware & the wallpaper screen went green. I clicked on my free spyware programme to try & remove the problem.

Kept getting these other messages popping up, so closed the windows as opposed to clicking on anything.

After my spyware programme had finished running it said to re-boot. Pressed yes to re-boot & since then the computer won't actually shut down properly, if that makes sense?

It goes to the wallpaper bit but none of the icons come up. Then after a while it goes to the welcome page. Have clicked on my icon to log on, it goes to the wallpaper but none of the icons appear. At the appearance of the welcome page, Ive also clicked on 'turn off computer' to try & switch off & restart but it won't do that.

All it seems to do is go into standby mode & then gets stuck.

Is there anything I can do??????

On the plus side, as I have been getting the 'blue screen of death' quite a bit just recently I've saved my most important docs to memory stick & have ordered a new lappy. Could do with getting into the comatose one though for some other info.

Any help would be sooooo much appreciated :)

You can start it up in safe mode. Have you tried pressing and holding the power button to see if it will switch off? It should turn off. As it's starting up, press F8 and keep tapping it. You should get a screen saying how to start up in safe mode. Then try 'system restore', which is in 'accessories/system tools'.
Hopefully that should work!!
Have you got a boot disc?
Whenevr you get something saying your computer is infected. it's usually the programme that will infect your computer cos they want you to buy it!! GGGrrrrrrrrrrr

I'm sure it would be possible to resurrect your laptop by re-formatting the hard drive (or installing a new hard drive - preferably with a bigger storage capacity) and re-installing Windows. As it's normally either a software problem (i.e. Windows) when you can't start up your laptop and get the blue screen of death - or a hard drive fault. But the rest of the hardware should still be just fine, so it seems daft to throw away what is otherwise a perfectly good laptop...

Angelina, I'm trying your suggestions. Not having much luck atm though so will keep trying.
Have held the on/off button down to switch the comp off but it still only goes into standby mode. Grrrr

Ruth, the laptop is past its best anyway. I think one of my girls dropped it & the top is actually breaking away from the base so it really is nearing the end of its lfe, lol. Some of the keys stick, & the letters are wearing away on a lot of buttons, lol. Too much geeking & fb, me thinks

Ah, my parents had this on their computer - you can open internet explorer by going to task manager (press ctrl+alt+delete) then select task manager and open it from there.

Then you can download some antivirus/spyware programmes to run and hopefully get rid of whatever it is! It took me a few days of being glued to their computer running lots of different programmes to totally sort it though.

If you knew when it had got infected you could do a system restore, but it's often difficult to know when infection occurred!

Thanks for your reply but I can't do anything with the laptop  I get as far as the wallpaper showing but no icons show so I can't click on anything :irked:.

Any pearl of wisdom from anyone else???

Yes, that was the same with the one I'm talking about, if you press the ctrl, alt and delete key at the same time and select task manager, you should be able to open programmes from there.

Have pressed the ctrl, alt and delete key at the same time (many times!) but still nothing happens:irked:

ps, hope I didn't sound rude earlier - didn't mean to! Blessed technology!!!!

Bloomin' computers!!!!!

After all the hoohaa with my lappy it ended up needing a rebuild so I'm just waiting for it to come back from being done. Fortunately the bloke isn't charging too much to do it :green:

Anyway, been using my salon laptop in the meantime & would you believe it, a similar poxy thing happened again!!!:eek: But, thanks to Angelina's advice I managed to sort this one out.

So, thanks Angelina & also for the other coments :green:

Glad you got it sorted! Luckily it's not going to cost you too much either.
Glad i was of some help with my limited knowledge of computers!
I know what i'm doing sometimes but i don't understand the jargon-i use my own language-simple english!!

My laptop got infected with a virus from Security Tool, so irritating! Who sends these things?

Basically it get popping up with "have detected 30 viruses on your computer, to fix this problem pay us $19.99 per month for virus protection".

Couldn't use anything on the computer. What a con! I had to go to a computer shop and they fixed it. They had heard of it before and lucky for me i didn't lose anything, but still i'm £75 lighter. It was more difficult than they expected.

I'm still waiting for my original lappy to come back from it's rebuild & I'm really, really hoping it will still have my emails on there & my favourites folder. I will seriously cry if it's all gone!! Luckily I managed to save most stuff but didn't get to do it all.

Perhaps Ruth or someone else could enlighten me as to whether that info will still be on the computer :)
