Hi all, I'm curious to know more about the World of mobile hairdressing. I'm a qualified (Lv 3 NVQ) hair stylist with over eight years of top salon experience. I left the four walls of the salon almost 3 years ago to experience a business environment and gain some business qualifications (in the hope of returning to the hair industry as a salon owner). Three years on I'm now a business Financial Analyst and partly qualified accountant. I feel I've reached a level of business competency to either open my own salon, or (while the economy is a little fragile) work mobile. I've always been inquisitive about mobile hairdressing but slightly sceptical to it's financial rewards. I would really appreciate an insight to life as a mobile hairdresser and the success' that are to be gained. Also, I am a stylist only (cutting) but take pride in the quality of my work and was once highly reputable around my area. I totally understand that offering a cutting only service will earn me less money but I'm hoping my professionalism, cutting competencies and experience will make up for not offering a colouring service. What does everyone advice? Shall I leave the office job and make a return to hairdressing? Thanks guys, Brad. Twitter - @RealBradHaverly :)

If you love hair, do it!
In my own personal opinion, as I have worked in high end salons, worked mobile, and now own my own salon, I much prefer being the salon owner.
When I was mobile, I never really felt I was working to my best ability. I didnt have the encouragement and inspiration of my collegues and I always felt as though I was selling myself short, as the kind of clients in my area who want a mobile stylist, want a quick and cheap job.
That just wasnt me. Im a perfectionist and from running my own ship, I get to do it just the way I want. I love it. Its the hardest thing Ive ever done (and Ive had 2 kids!!) but so so worth it.
As I said, this is just my opinion, and not meant to offend any mobile stylists! It's just I didnt particularly enjoy it as much...
Hope that helps....:D

I love being a personal hairstylist :0)
I can give my clients time and attention, far more than I can in a busy salon. Charging enough is my downfall however. I know I don't charge enough but I genuinely get huge satisfaction from seeing someone happy with their hair, having time for a chat and getting to know them. Is there any way you could start off with a few clients to test the water and see how it feels?

I am now a mobile stylist, with 13 years of great salon experience, I've been mobile for 18 months and the only thing I miss from the salon is the basin :D best move I ever made! Financially I'm better off, I have more time to myself, no one to answer to, no staff to stress over (I have been a salon owner and managed salons for others) you'll never know if you don't try and you may regret if you don't ;) go for it!

go mobile, i love it you are always better off as your own boss, and if you end up with any really terrible clients you are simply full booked for the the next 8 weeks if they try and re book !!

I would love to go mobile, but how would you go from working in a salon 5 days a week to mobile? I wouldn't have any clients at home and unable to build them up as working full time?

What's the average salary for mobile these days compared to working in a salon? Xx

I work in a salon but do mobile on my days off and evenings, it rules my life! But I absolutely hate mobile! Lugging all my stuff about and people take the piss let u hang around while they just finish dinner or just finishing the washing or just do this just do that, also if u haven't been in a salon for awhile how would you get clients as it will be harder to work from scratch again?
