Hi all,

I'm new here and this is my first post,:)
1st a little about me, I'm 40+ and work nights as and when required but have always held an interest in nails and after mulling things over with hubby I decided to do something about it.
I have completed and passed an intensive course in Nail Technology with the Nail and Beauty school in Nottingham as there was no collage course available. I would of prefered to do an VNQ2 with the collage as my thoughts were that the training would be more indepth and with them being part time would enable me to do it around work.
As it stands I don't feel confident about going out there and doing, as I feel I need more training I do have insurance with ABT but have nobody to paractice on. I have found that the local collage are holding a small meeting for interested parties on Monday to see if there is enough people to do the course, but apparently it's not looking promising:(. I have looked at other collages in the area and they have the same issue or have entry requirement that I do not meet.

My question is :
What are your suggestions/ advice as I am looking to gain knowledge and experience but also the qualifications to go with it and that enable me to go further as in, you can't do nvq level 3 until you have done nvq level 2 etc.
My understanding is that if I train with a well known brand then it is not a qualification as such, eg nvq or vtct, but more like training on how to use their products to get the best results. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Any help or advice would be greatfully appreciated.

Edit = spelling :S

Hi and welcome ,

What was it about your training that you did not think was good enough ? Are you looking to train in Gel or Liquid and powder? What issues are you having exactly ?

When i first started if I could not get anyone to practice on I just practiced on ME .:)

I would have to disagree with you slightly about NVQ.I would like to say straight off that I am a trainer for a brand but in no way does that change my view as I HAVE done ,in the many years I have been qualified, both brand and college training and let me tell you the brand training ( and this was different companies ) was far superior in every aspect to the college training I had

If you did do a college course then you would be using whatever products that college uses . Then when you want to set up for yourself ( which I am assuming you would want to do ) you may want to choose a completely different brand to work with . And therein lies the issue . Although the basic technique will be similar for each gel or Liquid & Powder brand each brand will have peculiarities specific to them . So for example you go to college and train in gel A then when you start up you want to use gel B the specific gels within that range will be different and each will have its own way to be applied

I think you best course of action would be to research into what brand you think you would like to use ( maybe even order a few different trial kits to try out first ) and do further training with that company . take a look at salons in your area and see what products they are using . Dont get bogged down with thinking about NVQ 2 and 3 . I am not saying that they are not worthwhile just that there are other , and possibly better routes to start you in your career

Perfect10kb thanks for the reply.
It's not that I thought that my training wasn't good enough, I really enjoyed it and learnt alot but I personally feel that I need something more. I thought that NVQ was a qualification that I would have to get sooner or later ???, and with the course being longer via building a portfolio and assignment's etc (through collage or company), which I assume I would get feedback on, thus knowing where I need to improve or where I'm going wrong.

The product's we used in training are not the product's I wish to use on client's, so I see what your saying in that regard, I am looking around at different brand's now trying to find one I want to try, as yes I am looking to set up on myself, but do not have the confidence to do that just yet as I do not want to damage anybodys nails for them. I am practicing the basic mani and pedi on a couple of friends but not acrylics or gel due to their job's (food industry) they are not allowed. As for my self I would have to apply acrylic/ gel one day and remove the next as my job (at the moment) can be quite physical and I wouldn't want to end up ripping my nail off, would aplication one day then removal the following day damage my nail's if I did it too often?

Hi Again ,

Good product training SHOULD have assessments . This is not just for college courses . On our courses you have to complete at least 15 sets of nails and send in for assessments thus ensuring constructive advice throughout . Also good training should offer ongoing support as we do . Just because someone has completed their first course with us does not mean we then let them drown if they need help. They can come to us for as long as they need for for ongoing help and advice

Most good brand training will give you that . As for the NVQ being a requirement . There was some talk a few years back of it becoming mandatory but apart from a few London boroughs that has not happened

If you kept applying one day and then removed the next in all honesty this would not really do any good for your nails. You could do on yourself and then keep them really short . This would be a better option and to be honest even if you do have a hard job if there are short and well applied they should last
