Hi!

I hope you can help!! I am recently qualified in Gel Extensions (and Gel Polish) - I don't have any problems with Gel Polish however almost all of the Gel Extensions that I have done on clients, at least one of the extensions has fallen off of the nail within a week. It's so strange as I am certain I have followed the correct steps and made sure they are built up well etc. I have used two different types of Gel so cant be a problem with the gel. I've also used 2 different primers and this hasnt helped either!

There must be something I'm doing as it cant be right that it would happen to everyone! The only strange thing is, I have done them on myself and havent had any problems at all!

Hopefully you guys can shed some light for me!!!

Thanks :)

Hiya,

Few quick questions -

Can you list your whole procedure including prep, what you're using and doing?
Condition of clients nails where they are not lasting?
How have they fallen off? Have they lifted? Chipped? Or come off whole?

You should get some more specific help if you answer those :)

Hi :)

The conditions of the nails have been different on each client, nothing outstanding to suggest they wouldnt last (apart from maybe one). Clients have reported that they have come off whole.

To be honest, after reading a few posts on here - although I have been building up the Gel I dont necessarily think that I have been building it up enough on the stress area to create the right balance. It sounds as though this could be the cause.

My steps are as follows:

Prep nail - cut nail if necessary, pushing back cuticles, use 240 grit file over nail then wipe with alcohol.
Apply tips
Blend tip & take shine off tip - remove dust/wipe
Apply Primer
Apply thin base layer of gel
build up gel x 2
file nail to smooth and wipe
Apply gel polish etc..

Do you use any cuticle remover?
You need to work on your prep - this video helped me loads with removing all cuticle. A lot of it you don't even know it's there...

IMO this will be why the nails are lifting off whole. If you are not building the apex enough then the nail will likely split at the tip not come off whole.

Thank you for reply! This is super helpful, I thought I was spending enough time on the cuticles but looking at this, maybe not! I've give it a go! Thank you!

Ok first off . Its just impossible for nails to 'just fall off'. I could sit and look at my nails for weeks and I can guarantee that none of them would just suddenly jump off my nail ;)

The fact that they say they have come off whole would suggest that they have not adhered to the nail properly in the first place . If your apex was wrong then it is more likely they would break at the stress area and not come away whole

So if not adhering then you have to look at what can be causing that and the 2 most likely culprits are :

1 Wrong lamp and/or incomplete product cure

Solution . Look at when you last changed bulbs AND the quality of those bulbs & is the lamp correct for the gels you are using. Also make sure each layer of building gel that you apply is not too thick

or 2

Insufficient prep work so you need to look at your cuticle work . cleansing etc

And then of course it could well be that they have had a little lifting and they have given it 'a helping hand '

x

Thanks for your reply .

So I'm 99% sure it's not the lamp as this is brand new and was an expensive one!

It sounds as though then that I need to take more care with my prep work! And ensuring the nail is cleansed properly before applying. (I do, do this at the moment but I guess I don't pay close enough attention to it!)

Thank you for your advice

Hi Alice . The fact that the lamp is brand new and expensive does not make a jot of difference

It is the compatability and quality that count together with its suitability for products you are using

You would not believe how many people ring us to say that our gels are just not curing only to find out that they are using the wrong lamp and are trying to cure a UV gel in a LED lamp ......!

I can imagine, but I am definitely using the correct products/curing times for the lamp. :)

What brand gel are you using and what brand/type lamp? Are you using a system as a whole? i.e. are all products the same brand or mixed and matched.
Also immediately prior to applying your primer you need to be dehydrating the nail not simply dusting/wiping it.

Sorry to jump in.

Dnt beat yourself up beaut it's happened to us all when u do your consultation ask q's about there lifestyle as gel isn't suited for everyone, keep an eye on your prep make sure it's free from any living debris on the nail keep the gel away from the skin also a tip for u try using a sculpting gel and turn your lamp upside down and place there hand in if it was upside down this will help keep your apex in place and be easier to file into shape Nsi secrets primer is good hope u find the answer to your problem xxx
