Hi hair geeks hoping you can help. I have a client for beauty treatments who has just found out that she is 7 weeks pregnant. She usually puts henna in her hair and isnt sure if it is safe to continue doing so. Shes worried due to complications in a previous pregnancy.

Can she continue to use henna in her hair or not?

thanks x

I'm a colour tech and I am 8 and a half months pregnant- the way I see it is it is there personal choice. There is no full blown proof that colorant of any sort will affect the baby.

But if it makes her anxious then she shouldn't. Surely if it were harmful then us hairdressers would have very complicated pregnancies! Also in many countries like India it is the type of colorant used most on hair and skin.

Many factors instructions would also state if it were not safe for pregnant women. She may want to do a skin test as I have been a bit more sensitive with colouring during my pregnancy

That or she could have the henna foiled into her hair so it dosent touch the scalp.
I can't see why a problem would occur as there is a lot of products containing henna without problems being seen. But defo skin test as the hormonal change could be a risk factor in colouring coco

Skin test is the best option. The client may not be allergic to the colour, but the baby might, you dont know when the baby is still un-born. Eveything you put on the hair passes into the blood stream....everything. But having said that, I dont see a problem with colouring using henna, and as tomme said, highlights are the safest option as the colour wont touch the scalp. :)
