Hi there,

I've just started an apprenticeship in a small hair salon in my area (3rd week in) and have recently had my interview for college. And was told that I will be attending college once a week if i accept. But wondering if it's worth it? as my boss has been encouraging me to go the day i have off as "they are paying me to be trained their way". - which i think is a bit naughty as the college have said they prefer me to go on a day i would be working at the salon. (appreticeship should last 2 years)

However i guess my main concerns are.. What are the main benefits of having the NVQ and not having the NVQ?? - What do salon owners look for when advertising for hairdressers? - do they see what they can do or look at NVQs?

Is it true that people look for at least 2 years floor experience??

These may seem silly questions but would really appreciate any advice as i'm feeling a bit confused!!

Thank you !! xxx

Hey :)

you will need a qualification behind you...without one you would stand no chance getting a job in another salon after leaving yours....

If you are going to college as part of your apprenticeship then what the salon have said is a bit naughty i'd say...

If you go to college on a day you normally have off then you'd get a day off that you'd normally work so it shouldn't matter what day you'd go on, you should have 2 days off a week...you shouldn't work more than 40 hours a week and that includes college...well that depends how old you are if you don't mind me asking? :)

Hey! thanks for your reply :)

Yeah I thought it was a bit naughty, the ladies at college were really lovely and said that they will support me and talk to my boss as they have dealt with him in the past :p.

What you have said sounds about right - 2 days off, 40 hours a week etc. - thats how its meant to be! I don't want to miss out on my NVQ really!

i'm 17, so does that still apply?? xx

u also need qualifications to get insured when your working as a hairdresser so i agree without them your less likely to get a job elswhere when your trained ....ive found employers are normally more interested in floor experience too x
