I trained in beauty therapy my early 30's. Previously I'd always worked in highly regarded corporate roles ...but was very unhappy. I LOVE beauty therapy and I'm so glad that I made the change but I do struggle sometimes with the small minded views.

Today there is an article on the daily mail website regarding the danger of manicures. So many of the comments are slating beauty therapists and nail techs. A few comments state that the only people who work in the industry are those that weren't clever enough to achieve decent grades at school. Regardless of the fact that I went to university, I find this is so insulting. The sad thing is that people were agreeing and liking the comment. I'm fuming!

Someone said to me last week "oh you don't look like a beauty therapist" and when I asked what they meant, they quickly added "no, I mean in a good way, you look like you know what you're doing". WTF!

I'm aware of peoples perceptions and usually I brush it off but it's really got to me today. I just find it so sad.

I know. It's a hard one to change. I'm a qualified college lecturer and in my mid 30s currently setting up my mobile business. I hate the perception people have that all therapists are idiots

People's perception of beauty therapists are 18 year olds straight out of college chewing gum, with orange skin and fake lashes. I'm happy to be just a nail girl. I'm not orange either! I earn more than most people who have proper jobs! I know more science now than I did at school and run a fully booked salon with 6 beauty therapists. If anyone thinks it's an easy job, I'd like to see them try!!

It doesn't bother me at all now.
I actually feel quite smug when I get the occasional comment and think if only you knew...
I left a successful yet stressful career, retrained and set up my own business which is fully booked within 2 years and I'm earning substantially more than I did before and most importantly I love my job. Can they say the same?

This so infuriates me ! Client says to me , 'you're not the typical hairdresser type ' !!! I have worked in many salons but am now mobile and have worked with many intelligent colleagues with great personalities , why do people think hair and beauty people are thick

I used to let this bother me and even came out of beauty when I was younger. I'm back in it now for over 2 years working for myself and I appreciate it so much more and I'm really not bothered what anyone thinks I'm happy.
People always judge no matter what you are doing someone is on hand to lay a judgemental comment. As long as you are happy try not to let it bother you x

Pft idiots I basque in the fact people say this yet I made £500 over three days - not many can say much to that ;)
