I had a guy call me yesterday at the salon. He explained he got my number from my website and that he saw I use kerastraight. He then went on to ask did I know about some tests that were carried out in July, I said no and he said "you should really know everything about a product if you are going to specialise in it" (instantly got my back up)

he went on to tell me that kerastraight and a few other companies that he named were put on the dangerous products list, and were not safe to use and had been recalled. He then went on to say the product he distributes is the only safe one on the Market that has passed all these tests.

Has anyone else heard any of this? He emailed me some more info, I could forward it to anyone who wants a look. I just found it all a bit peculiar that he was openly slating his competitors and also that I've heard none of this on here or from kerastraight?

He is lying and trying to sell you something, using scare mongering to do it as well, how see through. I dont know but could you report it to someone, dont know who though?x

I didn't like his attitude so I knew from the word go i didn't want whatever he was selling. I have the email, written proof of him saying these other products haven't passed safety tests.

Many products we use could be spun off as extremely dangerous.....when used by uneducated people.

Sounds like a scam, especially when he needs to down the competition to up his own product.

What was he promoting?

There has been some scaremongering about formaldehyde in 12 week blow drys. I lump it in with the storied that hair dye causes cancer, ext cause baldness, mascara ruins your eyes and living always ends in death.
Until someone other than a salesman publishes a definative study, I shall ignore.

Definatly my views exactly!

As far as I know, all 'Brazilian' type straightening products contain formaldehyde or similar 'aldehyde' chemicals. These are what actually straighten the hair (keratin is after all, just protein). Formaldehyde is banned by the EU in concentrations above .02% in cosmetic products, because it is a known cancer-causing material whether it is on your skin or breathed in. Some products being imported are up to 45% formaldehyde! Heating with straighteners causes toxic fumes. In the US, many salon staff are already experiencing breathing problems. I believe these products could cause serious health problems, now and in the future, especially to salon staff who are more exposed. I don't want to scare-monger, but use at your peril!

i ofen get a sore throat after doing a treatment anyone else noticed this???

A full chemical breakdown. Nothing untoward there, just Google the ingredients. Years ago all the bad publicity about hair extensions was actually started by rivalling hair extension companies, he probably just wants to sell his product. There is no formaldehyde in the Brazilian blowdry products. It is (or was?) in the Japanese straightening systems.

You know me, science girl, I check it all out!

I did notice that I got a sore throat in close spaces, so now I use an air filter when carrying out a treatment.

I smoke 40 **** a day, so a bit of fumes is nothing x

LOL! I like that!!

How odd is this my forefinger is numb after doing 2 Brazilians today, and it still is now 3 hours later, also I purchased a new set of straightners, not a gr8 make, but off the shelf from Sallys, 2 Brazilians later I had to take them back as the ceramic coating was completely striped off, 1 Brazilian later tonight, 2 nd pair, ceramic coating on its way out again, think I'll exchange for FHi.

This is starting to make me wonder! Has anyone else experienced this?

No, my GHD's are fine. The forefinger issue is more likely to be caused by vibrations from the hairdryer.

I got a backtracking email yesterday claiming they had got the wrong info from the EEC.

Again I can forward it on to anyone who's interested but I already noticed some geeky email addresses on it :)

Hi - First post, just thought this may be of interest to you... I'm not a professional, but I do my own keratin treatment. I was recently looking for new products/availability in the UK, and have come across several pages warning of recalled keratin treatment products. The recalls were due to higher amounts of formaldehyde than the legal limit. Recalls include products from Kerastraight, Coppola and Global Keratin. They're all very recent. I've inserted the links below.

Recalled: KeraStraight Hair treatment - KeraStraight Treatment | Recalled Products (BETA)

Recalled: 1. Coppola Designer Hair Care; 2. Coppola Designer Hair Care. Hair treatment â?? Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy | Recalled Products (BETA)

Recalled: Global Keratin Hair treatment - Functional Keratin Hair Taming System Blond/Light Wave coloured "chocolate" | Recalled Products (BETA)

Good detective work.
Thanks for sharing.

I don't do a straightening treatment - no call for it as yet. But the fact it contains formaldehyde is interesting. My husband is a furniture designer/maker and he has to uses masks particularly with MDF as it contains formaldehyde as a glue ( I'm sure in much greater %) but we can't burn the offcuts because they are toxic and if a small piece finds its way into the woodburner it pops and is really fumey and gives me a sore throat. SO wear the masks its not worth risking your health.

The thing that put me off was that they tell you to use it in a well ventilated room, as most of my hairdressing clients have their hair cut in their homes it's not very practical for me.
