As for the link to Oprah's site, give me a break! Since Oprah champions Jenny 'mommy instinct' McCarthy, you really can take everything (and everyone) on that forum with a pinch of salt. Jeez! If you want facts about science then look at published papers NOT Oprah!

I thought it was a pile of s***e too Donna, but just wanted some feedback from you in the know......the man who posted the link on my friends facebook is apparently a top hairdresser who works with celebs and does the hair for advertising campaigns for the major (consumer) hair companies.

I am talking about something that REALLY happened in Brazil while I lived there and I WAS THERE at the time and saw MANY cases of people being intoxicated or even dying after the treatment. I don't have a clue of what oprah site is about... if you check on google.com.br (brazil one) you will find articles about this treatment and the danger in them.

Now you do whatever you like. I just gave my advice of something that I've known about for many years.

Now some people would rather be ignorant than sacrifice their beauty or profits.

I'm out!

I don't think Sophisticutz is saying that you are wrong or that what you have said didn't really happen, but she has pointed out that you are referring to a different product to what is being discussed here. She knows her science stuff and has researched the product thoroughly.......I for one respect her knowledge.

The product I am talking about is exactly the same one as you are all talking about.. and it comes from Brazil where I come from btw. The name of this product in Brazil is obviously different because it is in Portuguese, not in English.

Escova progressiva is the same as brazilian blowdry. They all have the similar formulas with harsh chemicals otherwise it would be impossible to achieve the results.

I translated the stories. They were all about the one case, one incidence does not make a valid result. I googled it, searched the scientific papers on it and scanned the ingredients.

The product referred to from the information you provided has a different chemical make up to the Keratin blowdry used here. The only evidence there is about the dangers is anecdotal. There is no valid scientific evidence to say it is dangerous. We have very strict guidelines in the UK. I am not saying it isn't dangerous but what I am saying is there is no valid evidence to say it is dangerous.

Just because you thought you witnessed side effects doesn't make it valid. That is not how science works. :)

Hi Viglioni,

Don't take it personally I know you are concerned about this product, but ALL the keratin treatments/ Brazilian Blow dry treatments in the UK have to pass leglisation before they are allowed to be used. They may well have the same name, and in fact same packaging but they have had certain elements removed. I have done soooo much research I promise you. In fact the product I use, is indeed from Brazil, but because all the dangerous ingredients have been removed, the instructions on the bottle do not match the instructions I have been given, because these are missing.
I have heard about people dying in Brazil, but I think we all agree no one wouild get away with it in the UK or even Europe. Seriously the product are the same, but different, if that makes sense?

Hi Fuzion,

Thanks for your polite reply. :) As I said before I am not a hairdresser so I don't really know about this product being sold in the UK. The only thing I can say here is about what happened when this product was first developed in Brazil. As you say the UK guide lines are very strict, don't get me wrong, but Brazil has strict laws too. If you ever been there you will know how bureaucratic that country is.

My opinion is that no chemical is ever safe. If something makes your hair straight for 3 to 4 months there is got to be something very strong to be able to do that. I've seen the components in it and there are hazardous chemicals like other hair products have, which can be intoxicating. Of course you are a professional and you choose what treatments to carry out and if you feel they are safe then fine.

Unfortunately I believe that we can only know for sure the side effects of a product in the long term. After something has been on the market for at least 30 years then we start to find out what the consequences can be. Asbestos is an example of this and so on.

I hope you understand where I'm coming from.

Take care, V.

That is a very good analogy Viglioni.

My husband deals with Asbestos & it is scary to think how people have handled it in the past.

I have decided to leave Brazilian treatments to others as I don't think I could live with myself if in 10/20 years it was shown that I had caused any discomfort to anybody I have treated...there are so many other things that are far less of a worry to be doing.x

Do Try Brocato, Dangerous Chemical free, that is why i chose it and the Results are FANTASTIC and it is well cheaper than others too....

I know exactly where you are coming from, acid perms were extremely popular 10-15 yrs ago, then suddenly removed because they were proved to be cancerous, but to the hairdresser, not client. It is normally prolonged use to these products that cause the problem. This does go through my head constantly agreed admittedly.
Lets see what the future holds, many thanks for your research and links:hug:
