Hi hair geeks,

Just a quick question. I am now completing my NVQ 2 in beauty therapy (as the course ran on Saturdays and I work during the week).

I have always wanted to become a hairdresser (life long dream of mine), this year I get married and I will be in a better finanical situation to do my hairdressing course full time :D (YAY!!!) (When they say full time do they mean I actually have to go to college Monday to Friday? Some people have told me full time is only 2-3 days a week but don't know if thas all colleges )
My question is do I have to do the level 1 in hairdressing or can I just apply for the level 2? I have no salon experiance (just the beauty experiance on my course) I'm 24 years old (25 this year feel older though!)

Thanks everyone :)

a lot ov colleges do 3 days a week as fulltime i know mine does

and what level are you doing nvq or vrq if its vrq you are looking at dont do level 1 as its the very basics and even when you have done vrq 2 you are still not fully qualified and would HAVe to do level 3 but if its nvq id do the level 2 x

It depends on your college if you get straight into level 1 or 2 but because you've had no hairdressing experience before they will most likely say you have to do level 1 first ... Full time means 12-13 hours a week (well at my college anyway!)
I attend level 2 full time
Tuesday 9:30-3:30
Wednesday 9:30-1:30
Friday 9:30-1:30
So not bad days/hours!
Hth xx

When I was doing my 3 years of beauty they were all either 3/4 days and I think one of them was a half day x

Yh most colleges will allow you to go onto level 2 if your older as you will be more mature but some places still won't let you on the course.. Being older/mature and having to do the basic stuff can be very frustrating as you feel like a child lol x

its so confusing because it seems it diffrent rules and advice everywhere you go lol x

I was just wondering about your levels ? I'm in the us we do 9 months full time 1500 hours then receive our licenses

Mine was 3 full days 1 half day, level 1 nvq, although you do a lot of the background work with removing chemicals etc... Reception, and the like is mainly about health and safety, having done beauty this should cover you on most of it, then catch up on the understanding while in level 2.

Some colleges even do night class if that's an option you would like to explore. And with people saying a mature student should jump, I can't see y, I'd had 3 years salon experience before going to college, understood the h&s, and done the full level 1 criteria before I was old enough for college, but it must b a age thing. Level2 was pretty easy as I'd started colouring, blowdrying and basic cuts in the salon while doing level 1.

So try and get a salon placement, and see about night classes, it will help u bucket loads in the long run xoxo
