Hey all hope you are well and enjoying the lovely Autumn!

I need advice on how to best play this and I'm a little stuck.

I took on a self employed microblading tech 6 months ago renting in a Monday and Tuesday. (2 days min is what I usually ask of self employed staff)

However, I employed her about 2months later for a Thursday ,Friday & Sat as a hair and beauty ....she's fab! , Ideal staff member!
....but has now asked that as she's attending college on a Monday (for me) that she can give up the self employment and I make the money for the microblading, But employ her an extra day. This is fine but how do I devise the wages.......do I pay her normally as she will be moving on those days between hair ,beauty and microblading. And do i contribute to her equipment? /Qualification ? X

Anyone please?

I would pay her a salary for the hours worked, and if she does microblading she pays you a percentage. What is she doing at college? Is she tied in to employment with you following training? If not, and she’s doing the training for you as an employed staff member, she should be and you should be paying her, but you can have that conversation and see what she thinks. Keeping staff happy and motivated is a two way street and its not a one size fits all x

I'm not sure what to suggest here, I would ring Acas? X

Sorry, I'm a bit confused about the self employed/employed aspect.
Are you saying that she's still going to be working one day a week exclusively doing microblading as a self employed therapist or are you employing her 100%? If employed 100%, this could be a really good opportunity for both of you.

A word of caution. If you are sending her on training, have you incorporated this into her employment contract such as requiring a minimum period of employment with you or forfeit £xx of the cost of training if she leaves before x months?

If I was the therapist doing microblading and building up my experience, I suspect I'd be looking to going completely self employed in the not too distant future, particularly if I'd gained additional skills and a loyal client following!

I agree with @squidgernetball about working hard to keep staff happy and motivated and not taking them for granted. Just reading threads here on SG, a lot of salons are struggling to keep hold of very good therapists because they're able to earn a good living by specialising in things like eyebrows, waxing, massage etc.
However, not everyone wants the risks of being self employed so there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to find a happy medium.

Hi guys thanks for the reply. She was working one day a week exclusively but now wants to be employed while using her microblading while employed so her column today was:
*Child cut
*Brows
*Microblading top up
*Microblading consultation
*Child cut

So I get what you mean totally, she is ace and I'll keep her happy. But the business is new and she's not busy yet..... So financially it needs to benefit both of us.
She was the one who suggested using her microblading skill in salon while being employed x

I was worried being self employed and employed on the same day would be confusing as she will dip in and out of the stylist/therapist role.
Yes she's doing her level 3 hairdressing on a Monday all day x
