Hi there I currently do mobile hairdressing and then I work in a salon part time (for a guaranteed wage) only thing is I am so quiet at this salon (as I am new) but have been here 3 months!! Its a very clicky village salon so I think that's why. I am just wondering if anyone recommends rent a chair? And what the perks are and if I hold just break free and do mobile (I don't like salon environment but LOVE mobile) but I'm scared I won't make enough. I'm going to do a hair extension course next month so hopefully that will pick up for me has anyone got any good tips for advertising myself/pricing etc need some advice thank you :)

Hi

Rent a chair is great if you cover the cost of your rent however some salons may want a 50/50 cut it all depends on the salon. The best form of advertisement is word of mouth if clients are talking a out you the. That should get you more business. Facebook and twitter are also a good way of pro outing your business. If you go on e bay you can purchase 5000 leaflets for £60 they create your design for you at an additional cost. Just be patient, try re booking your clients every 6 weeks this can also guarantee you business and makes you look professional. I think you have just had a bad experience in the salon your in. Mobile can be difficult as clients can cancel at the last minute and your then 15 miles away from your next appointment. Have a long think and then make the decision. The other route could be get clients to come to you and work from home xx

I work mobile full time and I love it! It's taken my a good 12 months to become fully booked on a weekly basis, I keep 90% of my clients in the same area and I can now be choosy as to who I want as clients ;) financially it was the best move for me although that's not why I left a salon environment. I have only ever got 2 clients from leaflet drops and one of those was a client that recognised me! I have been hairdressing for 14 years so have loads of experience including having my own salon for a short time. What I will say as that in a salon you not only have the support and expertise of other staff but you also have your captive audience and it's easier to build your clientele. My friend rents a chair, her weekly take is tons more than mine but with her overheads she earns pretty much the same so it's swings and round abouts.

Thanks for both your views. I have recently read Lynne bakers thread on "more ways to promote your business" which has helped alot. I think I need to take the plunge and break free but will wait till I'm more busy consistently on the days im not working in the salon. I am only 21 so got a lot of time to build up my career. Just working in a salon for people is making me dislike what I do although I love hairdressing of any one understands my view? I think its the fact of being told what to do - us hairdressers are very strong minded individuals :) xx
