Hi,

I'm really keen on starting a nail technician course and have contacted my local college who unfortunately doesn't offer any nail course so my only option is a distance learning course.

As the courses are very expensive, I want to ensure I get on the right one. My outcome upon completing the course will either be working for myself or possibly beauty salon work. I have found a course via stonebridge college (see link) and would really appreciate any feedback on this course... All pro's and con's as I need to ensure I'm not taking a course with no recognised accreditation at the end.
Kind regards
Kirsty x

Realistically, I think you'll struggle to find paid employment in a salon without an NVQ or a recognised 'hands on' Nail course such as those offered by CND, OPI etc.
The main problem for a salon will be getting you insured.

Distance learning courses are ok as a starting point but inevitably, you will need to undertake further training and complete a recognised course in the future unless you only ever work on a self employed basis.

Would you consider travelling a bit further?

Thank you for your reply :) x

I started with a distance learning course which was enough to whet my appetite but not sufficient to start my business, I did 2 more courses before I felt confident so I'd say hands on is far far better if you can. x

Thank you for your reply :).

What distance learning course did you undertake? Also what additional courses did you do after?
Kind regards

I've had a read if the course details and I can't put my finger on exactly why but my first instinct is a big fat no. I think its because they offer so many courses, across so many subjects, it feels 'wrong'....and any course that refers to what we do as 'fake nails' gets a wide birth from me.

Much better to spend your hard earned cash on a more reputable course. You may have to use your holiday from work or cash in babysitting tokens but in the longer term it will be better.

Check out Sweetsquared as already mentioned, The Creative Beauty Group and The Nail Team by Gemma Lambert, all of which have educators in various areas around the country and good reputations for training and products

Do not do the course through stonebridge - its rubbish - i started it - then they sent the kit and it was awful - they claimed the practice hand was worth over £100, it was a £3 from amazon.

I've since invested in essential nails and as much as i know some ppl are against home learning - i love it - the support is there all the time - but for me i was already qualified in acrylic nails from a college course - i just started essential nails to update myself x

It doesn't have to be local college or distance learning.

If you want to train asap your best bet is to google for private training providers nearby or within a radius that you are able to travel.

Lincolnshire Beauty Therapy and Makeup Academy comes up from a google search.

Ideally I'd urge you to look for a vtct course such as the ones offered here as you want the course to lead to a qualification that is recognised.
