I think the spray paint....or any paint will scrap/chip/rub off eventually, especially on the work surface.
Can you not find some way of 'bringing in' the colour?
How about chocolate brown towels and accessories.
I'm a keen DIY 'er .......You're going to ruin the desk if you try to paint it...
It looks like a super shinny laminate, the hardest to cover.
Learn to love it as it is!
