Hey guys!

I'm in desperate need of help. I've been having difficulty with my nail extensions. I do acrylics but I live in a small town and they aren't popular at all which I'm very surprised at. Most people are looking for either gel overlays or extensions using tips and then applying the gel polish on top but the tips are not lasting at all. Sometimes only a couple of days. I use NSI tips and good glue as well and just not sure why they aren't lasting. Do you have any suggestions for me on either different tips to use or is it maybe something I'm doing incorrectly?

Any advice would be so much appreciated.

Thanks, Hannah

Hi Hannah
Firstly welcome
Secondly, can you give more detail? Are you doing a hard gel enhancement? And then gel polish on top?

Generally if an enhancement is breaking where the tip has been applied, the problem is normally down to poor apex placement and/or apex is not strong enough.

When working with hard gel it can be easy to not build up the stress point enough.

Do you mean just tips then gel polish?

Do you not apply hard gel after the tip and before the gel polish?
have you had any training?

Yes I'm fully trained. When I was taught it was just the tips and then gel polish. Should I be applying the hard gel after the tips and then the polish?

Yes there is no strength in gel polish so the tips will just break off.
You need the correct structure and strength in the enhancement using L&P or hard gel.
Do you mind me asking where you did your training? I've heard of this being done before but being called "weekend nails" etc.

I thought that yet. I've done all my beauty therapy training and my acrylics and tanning but it was just in a friends salon where I picked up the extensions, I've only recently started my own beauty business so still finding my feet. Thanks for all your help x

The strength of an extension is in the product - L&P or hard gel - there is no strength in just a tip and glue regardless of what glue you use.

Okay thank you. Can you recommend a hard gel to use? I use a mixture of artistic and cnd just now but mostly artistic.

You need to attend a course & be taught application.

Did your course actually cover acrylic application then or was the training kind of just in house at the friend's salon? Sorry if I misunderstood

I did a separate course for my acrylic application it was just the gel that I picked up at a friends salon x

Then surely you would of covered application on tips if you did an acrylic course? I'm slightly confused

Advise your clients that gel polish is not intended to support extensions. If they want additional length offer them acrylic extensions which you are trained in with gel polish over the top.

Acrylic might not be popular in your area but I am sure inappropriate nails systems causing premature breakages aren't either. Maybe they have a misconception of acrylic in which case you have an opportunity to re educate them and then use gel polish as an add on service.

Tip and gel polish is only used in what they call weekend nails. As the name suggests they are not likely to last much longer. You need structure & strength to any extension. I would suggest using a soak off builder gel or hard gel.
