Hello every one,

I've just been recommended this site, and I'm finding it fantastic already!! :p

Me and my hubby are following our dreams and setting up a guest house in the Scottish borders, the place used to be a pub with letting rooms upstairs. We are doing a full re-furb etc.

Well the old bar down stairs has its own entrance.... It's going to be my very own hair salon!!!! So very excited. Fantastic location, over looks the beach which is straight across the road!!

Anyways, I need help. I've been hairdressing for 17 years, 7 of which I have been freelance. I need all your advice on setting up, all you can throw at me please!!

I've always used wella, should I stay or try new, whats the best furniture, what do I need to know, rules regs etccc.

Throw it all at me please!! :p

Oh I still need a salon name.....

Hi, welcome to the site. I don't often write on the site but I get loads of info myself. I thought I would throw in a suggestion for a name. Seeing as it was a pub before how about " Hair of the Dog" sorry being flippant. But perhaps you could use its previous identity for inspiration for a name. What was its name before? Could you play on that. I have always dreamed of having a B&B and incorporating hair and holistic therapies as well. Good luck it sounds wonderful.

Thank you Celtica,

The pub was called The Home Arms, we're keeping the name to the home arms guest house, as all the locals will still refer to it as the home arms, some one said The hair Bar?? Lol

i like the hair bar lol x

The hair bar or hair home sounds good.
I popped into John Lewis the other day and seen gorgeous bathroom mirrors with lights in them and hidden shelves that would look beautiful in a salon. Otherwise there are hundreds of websites out there.
Depending on the look you want I rather like the look of old white dressing tables with large gold mirrors. It also depends on budget, but large mirrors from a non chain store look good and are a bit more unique.

I seen a stunning 18ft mirror in a shop near me for £600, if I had my own place I'd have that span one wall with units below it. Xoxo

Go matrix!! And the name The hair bar...then you can create an amazing colour bar...back wash bar and styling bar them throughout the salon :0)

Would the alcohol licence extend into the salon? You could sell wine or a beer while people wait or have their colour xoxo

Don't need one if you "include" it in your prices...I think!

Depends on your local council but we serve alcohol sometimes and inquired about it and aslong as your not selling it and just serving it its fine x

Ooooh that sounds good maybe an added nail bar one day haha x

I think the Hair bar is excellent. And maybe go all wood and old pub style mirrors and gentle men club style decor. Beer shampoo adverts. Shampoo dispenser like upside down spirit dispensers.
And as Jodie4156 said add an-ale bar:lol:

Oooh yes I'm liking the whole hair bar idea, colour bar etc,

Your right tho, could have a happy hour when the clients receive a glass of wine or something!?? :p

Need to decide on a colour theme,

I've seen some salon sets in red, not sure if it's a bit retro tho??

Like the white table idea with gold mirrors!!

Cappuccino walls black furniture and some wooden decorative bits? Quite natural as close to sea x

Congratulations on your new salon & guest house. Such an exciting time.

I like the idea of using it's history to inspire the name. You should do this for the decor too - use what's there as much as possible.

Re choosing a colour company etc - you should check who are the best suppliers to your area. Make sure you can get quick deliveries when you need them.

You should consider disposable towels for the salon - especially before you buy any washing machines etc.

Good luck with both new businesses. Keep us updated. Can't wait to hear more.

It's so exciting, we have been concentrating on the guest house to get it open before end of the summer so the salons been simmering on the back boiler. But I can't leave it there any longer I'm so excited!!
