Hosting can range anywhere from about £3 a month to about £50 for a brochure site (Servage Servage Hosting - One Solution is the cheapest reliable hosting that I use and costs about £4.50 a month, Fasthosts Web and email hosting, domain names and dedicated servers - Fasthosts is the UK's largest hosting company).

Interesting stuff! I went down the dedicated server route myself, and ordered a server from Dell back in July to my own specifications (with things like extra RAM, dual redundant power supply, RAID hard drive array) on which I then installed and configured Linux. I then found an excellent data centre in the Midlands where my server is now located, and have found them to be extremely reliable as well as reasonably priced. But I took that route because I write a lot of my own code in Java for things like content management etc; I like having that extra bit of control over what my system does, and the ability to code stuff to meet my exact requirements rather than be limited by an "off the shelf" content management system.

thank you for all your help and comments everyone. i have made some changes as advised.
i am quite happy with my website at the moment but may look into upgrading in the future.
at least i now know that i was on the right track originally with regards to price to have one made for me.:)

Hiya Ruth:

Ya, I do a similar thing (Linux on dedicated servers) although its not something I'd recommend for the faint hearted! (or people who don't think staying up until 3am trying to figure out why their mailserver stopped working suddenly is a fun way to spend a Friday night). I am a Debian divottee myself. :-D

Cheers,

Ben.

Aye, I've been dabbling with Linux since 2002 (as well as having been playing with Unix in general since my uni days in the mid 1990s) - I've always gone with Red Hat for servers though (I currently use CentOS as it's essentially the same as Red Hat Enterprise but without the hefty licensing fees) - although I rather like Ubuntu for desktop applications...
