I've been wearing them for years- usually get a clear fill and put polish on top. A friend has cancer, I'm going to be doing a lot of care, so I told my nail tech I need to take them off, she tried for 20 minutes to tell me "natural, no harm you nails, make stronger".
She took it off, she ground the crap out of my nails, and the acetone hurt, ran to sink, then dunked it in my soy milk I brought with me.
I'm going with no polish for a while, except for days I have business meetings. I'll put on some light Essie color, then take it off. My nails are wickedly thin and bendable now, and I have red and white spots, and places where my nails are super thin. Last time my fill was done (8 days ago), curing hurt, had to keep pulling my hands in and out.
I do the gel thing because it makes my polish last longer- always cooking and cleaning (foster to 12 animals), and spend my day at a computer typing.
Any suggestions as to what to use on my nails till they grow back in healthy? My nails grow crazy fast- if I don't change my polish, within 2 weeks, 1/4 of my nail is growth.

Your natural nails have been over filed and thinned, the nerve endings in the nail beds now have less protection hence the pain. Not sure why they were dunked in soy milk but I suppose if it stopped them hurting it did the job.

You can't repair over thinned nails, all you can do is wait for the new undamaged nail to grow back, you're lucky if your nails grow as fast as they do, hopefully it will only take a few months, for most people it can be 6 months, even up to 9.

You need to protect them as much as possible, a good quality nail strengthener and a colour to hide the damage are your best options now. A good quality cuticle oil such as Solar Oil will also help enough new nail growth.

I'm sorry you've had such a bad experience, I'd suggest finding a better nail tech for the future should you decide to have enhancements again

CND RescueRX was a life saver for me! Made a difference on day 1 & a REAL difference in just a week. Highly recommend giving it a go.

Find a CND salon or nail tech and buy some Solar Oil and Rescue Rxx. Apply 3 or 4 times a day and thus will help repair your nail plate. Although as Trinity says the actual damage will need to grow out but these products can help in the meantime.
