In my dreams!
i know i posted this in another thread, but i think it may have been wrong and i wasnt getting any replies...

I know its long but please read! I would be so grateful!

a hair and beauty salon up the road from me has a 'junior assistant' job going. I went in today for a treatment and was chatting the the girl doing the treatment about the job and she said no one else had asked or applied as far as she knew and it would require full time and one day at college.

She seemed to like me or she could just be being friendly but heres the thing..

She said that the lady i need to speak to would be in tomorrow so to either drop in a c.v or get her to give me a call. I said about popping in tomorrow to speak face to face (i hear this gives a much better impression than c.v's)

I am a confident chatty person however, not annoyingly over confident, and i am efficient and reliable, i am honest and do as asked, i dont look or act young for my age, most people think im around 18, i think i kind of look the part for a hairdresser and i just feel that this job is just PERFECT for what i have been searching for as it is literally a five minute drive up the road!

Also i am doing a nail technician and beauty therapy Level 2 home study course this year (ends this june) but what i ideally wanted to do was hairdressing and this is a good apprenticeship!

however the problem lies as i am only 15..

If she liked me and all went well do you think that my age would be a problem?

I have been looking up about it and it is legal to do as it is a form of education ( i have been home tutored for the past 3 years) and all i would need to do (if the salon was worried) is get a work permit from the welfare office.

I really would love this job, but im worried i will go tomorrow and it be ok then my age come up and be turned away... they want a junior and thats what i am so the government can fund me (i read this is why they like juniors)

Im not even worried about the money if i have to wait to be paid untill im 16, its only a year, and in the meantime im being trained!

Thanks so much for reading and i really appreciate your answers!!! Xoxox

I'd still go in for the chat.
Just go in and be totally honest about your age. Don't wait until right and the end of the chat and say 'oh by the way I'm 15'.
I'd take some info about the working permit that you'd need.

If she's not willing to take you on as a junior she may take you on as a Saturday girl until your 16, and then as a junior.

Being a hairdresser is not just 'looking the part' it's alot of hard work, and at junior level you may feel like a dogs body alot of the time, but it's well worth it in the end.
Good Luck x

You might want to take in all the relevant paperwork from the welfare office to ease any concerns they might have.
From an employer point of view I'm not sure I'd been keen on taking on a 15 year old though. How different in terms of emotional maturity from a 16 year old they might be, of course, varies enormously.
Good luck!

Good luck to you for thinking it all through and knowing what you want - you sound very mature xx

Are you in Essex? I don't know what the current law is but I know previously it has been that anyone under the age of 16 who should still be at school, even if you are home schooled, can only legally work a set number of hours a week.

From what you write, you will be doing 4 days a week which you cannot, is it possible to do it as part of a training course? Who knows? Why not contact education department at the council, starting point or that other agency for young people that I cannot remember the name of.

You're really looking for answers in the wrong place here but I would check everything out before you approach them as that is a question she may well ask and if you don't have proof then she may not enter into the discussion any further.

Let us know what education dept say.

hey all, thanks so much for all your replies! I got the job and she was fine with my age! i think the girl i spoke to the day before gave a word to her for me and she almost gave it to me straight away. Its three days a week then one day at college starting sept :)

Excited to start now!! :D:biggrin:

Fantastic news, well done.
No wonder she took you on, you have a great work ethic that many your age dont seem have these days.

I wish you the greatest success and hope to hear you are getting on as you learn and develop as a hairdresser.
All I would say in terms of advice is to hold onto that desire to learn but appreciate that as part of the learningprocess you will have to go through a while of hard slog at times which may not be fun. Honestly, it will be worth it in the end, and I hope one day when you are ready you end up with your own successful salon.
X
