Hi Guys,

I am looking to take a 'foundation' course to train as a nail technician and I have a few questions....

  • Is it essential (to be employed with a salon) that I take a course that is accredited with BABTAC or the Guild of Professional Beauty Therapists??
  • I have noticed in some of the threads on this web site that a lot of people are saying that to work in a salon the bare minimum qualification you need is a NVQ 2. Is this the case?
Working in a salon isn't my main aim as I know I can work mobile (with insurance). I know that it is better to train with a recognised brand, and both NSI and Creative training courses have been reccomended to me.

  • Is the NSI or Creative training course more recognised in the nail industry? I am veering more towards Creative as they seem to be more commercially dominant, however, NSI training courses are accredited with BACTAB and The Guild, whereas Creative isn't.
I would REALLY apreciate any help and advice you can give me, I'm desperate to get started on a course ASAP and am at my wits end:sad:!! (sorry about the long post)

Thanks,

Holly x

Any advice guys? x

Hi there,
sorry it took so long to reply to your post.
I noticed from your profile that you are in Bournemouth.
Why not just give the CND+ Academy in Bournemouth a ring or drop them a little email.
Ask them all the questions you can think of, they are a great bunch of girls and will be able to advise you on all their training aspects.... then you can make an informed decission and see if their training is something you would like to do.
CND provides the best up to date education and in my oppinion are the best.

Creative does have Guild accreditation and always has done.

The reputation of CND training is the highest there is bar none ... You won't go wrong there and they have 30 years at the top behind them to prove it :D won industry awards in the UK also for best nail training.

How lucky are you being in Bournmouth on the doorstep of a CND Academy+ and shop?

Most salons will snap your hand off if you say you have been CND educated and yes, the NVQ is a bare minimum qualification but is not at all necessary to have to work in a salon ... Only in certain London Boroughs for some unknown reason.

The course you take needs to be recognised by an insurance company in order to then get cover with them. A Guild accredited course means you can get insurance with the Guild for that qualification.

It really depends on the individual salon owner. The best thing to do is ring round a few local ones and see what they say.
