i just did a set of l&p on my auntie tonight and now i have atingling burn on my finger. It feels like i have burnt it with a cigarette. Its a small patch of little blisters and its red and there is a little skin peeling off too/ What could this be. If it is the monomer will this be a problem for me to work with it? I hope not ill be mad!

Did you accidentally get some monomer liquid on your skin?

Sounds like you have the gone beyond the first stages of over-exposure!?

Have you experienced itching, redness on your skin before this occasion?

For your own safety please take steps to prevent further exposure to the monomer liquid - it will get worse otherwise!

Hope this helps :D

Oh you poor thing
Which finger is sore?
I used to often get sore fingers when my day was jammed with L&P appointments. My thumb and fore-finger on my left hand got sore from filing and my ring finger on my right hand got sore from holding the file. Also if there was some monomer on my brush handle it would irritate this.
I now always wear sticky bandages on these 3 fingers. They sell them in all different colours at my local wholesalers.
Is it deffinately a chemical irritation and not caused by your file?

If this is a reaction to monomer Liquid ... IF ... then you have a problem and it will not go away. YOu will have to protect the area with gloves or something else forever!! Once allergic always allergic but the question is ...

Why are you getting monomer on your skin??? Better look very closely at your habits when working with monomer ... there is absolutely no need to be overexposing yourself unless you are working awkwardly with your brush etc. You will need to change your way of doing things.

i dont know why it got onto my skin. The rash is on my middle finger which i dont use my brush with. I know its a chemical reaction but i dont know how i got it! Today its going away but has skin peeling and is alittle sore, i am off to do a client so will definetly watch what is going on!

Also im using the crystal touch prostyler, i just used my brand new one for the first time yesterday. My old one is all sticky all the way up the handel is this normal and how do i protect my new one? When i finish my client i pour fresh monomer in my dish to clean it, but this feels a waste, is this right?
thanks again.x

Hi Zoe,
I too have what you have described as little blisters on a couple of fingers, but mine are due to a long standing allergy to the pith in oranges!!!!!!, they tend to erupt on even the slightest contact with it.
Regarding your brush, I have been using the crystal touch brush, and when my handle becomes slightly sticky I give it a quick wipe over with a pad with some scrubfresh on it,,,,,,does the trick brilliantly.
Hope you get to the bottom of whats causing it soon.

The stickyness on the handle is a clear indication that you are getting monomer onto the brush and your fingers. Change your grip on the brush ... I never have to clean the handle of my brush, never. Take great care this has to be solved.

It may not be that you are getting monomer on your skin...are you wearing extensions??

I had the problem but it was not due to me getting product on my hands it was partly due to me wearing the nails and also the dust caused from filing a clients extensions this combination caused serious problems for me.

Wear gloves and take your nails off and give your skin a rest. Then in time you MAY be able to put nails back on but only if your skin has calmed by then....If you dont your skin will start peeling off in chunks and the itching will get so back you will start ripping your skin off.

It took 4 months for my allergic reaction to calm down and now I wear gloves and wash my hands religiously and I can wear my nails with no probs at all and I have no probs doing clients nails at all.

Please don't ignore it as the concequences can be really bad.

thanks guys, i just dont know how i am managing to get monomer on my brush handle. Anyway ill try to get to the bottom of it. how do you people clean your brush if there is still monomer left in my dish it feels a waste to empty it then pour fresh in to clean it. Do you change it for every client?

Hi Zoe, I agree with Gigi on this - 110%!! I know because EXACTLY the same thing used to happen to me. I have replaced 2 brushes before i perfected the art of "not getting in a mess". My skin was really sore, and had exactly the same reaction and symptoms you have described. I had to get Betnovate cream from my doctor to help clear up my skin. I do occasionaly have a flare up now and then (if I don't wear gloves when cleaning etc). I bought some Nitrile Gloves to wear whilest working and this did help - but it took a lot of getting used to working in gloves.

Good Luck!

Hi Zoe, If your brush is sticky all the way up to the handle it sounds like you are working too wet. Check you are working with the correct ratio, then you will be using less monomer to clean out the brush. The reason we clean the brush between clients is that if you do have any left over residue in the brush then this will contaminate the fresh monomer for the next client and the client may end up with enhancements that start going yellow. You may also find also that it is difficult to pick up a bead if your brush is not cleaned thoroughly between clients. I clean my brush in fresh monomer between clients and then at the end of the day I pour a little scrubfresh in a dappen dish and clean the brush and then put her to bed......Whilst you may think its a waste of monomer, its a lot cheaper than buying a new brush every couple of weeks and also losing clients due to yellowing enhancements that they will go elswhere to get their nails done. Hope this helps.

thanks again for the help! Its just if you put fresh monomer in a dappen dish and you still have some left i have been wiping it out with kitchen paper then disposing. Can i not keep it for the next person or will it have product in it. i havent got a box for my brush and have been pouring new monomer in a dish then cleaning it then wrapping it up in kitchen paper. Is this ok?

Zoe, I would dispose of the little bit of monomer that you clean your brush out with as if there is any product left in your brush then its going to contaminate the monomer for the next client and its ok to store your brush in paper towelDavid
