Long post alert!

Ok so I'm hoping to embark on my new career after mat leave in Feb. I had originally planned on getting some salon experience but a chiropractor I know has shown an interest in the oncology treatments I can do and has suggested she would rent me a room in her very successful surgery if I wanted.

Firstly, what's a reasonable room rate? Probably daily rate as I doubt I could do full time.

Secondly, what would I need to do to set up? Any advice for new business loans/grants anything like that. I am clueless about this stuff but also quite excited by the possibility of this.

Any advice welcome!

It’s a difficult one and I look on it as a salon owner who has rented out rooms to therapists in the past.
You haven’t clarified what you do. Is it massage or other holistically as well? Are you going to do everything there or specific treatments? You need a massage couch. If you’re not using the room full time and you keep the couch there, someone else may use it. If you have the room full time, they can’t. You can have a mobile couch and take it home with you but that can be hard work. I doubt you’d get much help with set up costs. You’re really not looking at a lot. Couch, trolley etc. But more importantly, where does everything go when you’re not there? Could you have a lockable cupboard?
Room rate is down to them, but anything from £30-50 per day is the norm x

Thank you this is exactly what I was looking for! It was massage, facial and hand and nail treatments, but i think i would need to offer normal massage treatments to keep me busy enough. The set up costs will be more than just normal massage as I need to buy products specifically formulated for cancer patients. Good point about the lockable cupboard though, that's a great idea.

Is there anything legally I need to do to set up? Other than my own insurance, anything else? X

Glad it helps.

You need to inform hmrc that you’re self employed. If you play music that isn’t license free, you need a music license. Insurance, rent - think that’s about it. As I’m sure you know, there’s a lot of regular products that are perfectly safe for cancer patients!

Keep all receipts etc and good luck x
