Yesterday, my coworker's client requested clear Shellac nails with some glittery marbling in it, so my coworker applied Shellac base coat and then some Silver VIP status (which she marbled through) and then Shellac top coat. Although my coworker felt she did a satisfactory job in application and that everything looked fine when the client left. The client called today to say that it had yellowed in several spots. She said that she had not applied any sunscreen or bug spray. Do you have any other suggestions regarding what may have caued the yellow discoloration?

Spray tan? Curry spices? Hair dye? Make up? Smoking?

I have seen the surface go black from the die in black jeans.

It's a porous surface and can be affected sometimes if there is contact with a powerful pigment.

The client needs to review where she has been and what she has been doing. Nails don't discolour by themselves, certainly not Shellac. And I'm sure you will find it is not discolouring on every nail but just a few. It is those nails that have been in contact with something they shouldn't.

Some household chemicals can also cause discoloration, obviously it would be more noticeable with very sheer colours or french. Its really a lesson to the client to follow proper aftercare and wear gloves when doing household chores.

Hi, quick one.... Any ideas how to remove staining when it has happened?? I have a client who has recently had shellac, (2 days ago) had curry which has stained but isn't ready for removal and reapplication???

I would give the nails that are stained, the once-over with a fine block buffer (it should only be surface staining) and then re top coat. PS .. and charge for it.
