It depends on how much each client spends and how many hours you work each week. On average 3 clients an evening . So 12 clients a week on average .

Yes advertising is my next step, cafe, netmums , shops, fb, instragram, yell.com, leafleting , business cards etc . There is a good post ways to promote your business

I have been promoting on Facebook and am getting quite a few bookings which is promising. The only thing is fitting them in around my kids and my existing job but I am determined to push myself and fit people in when I can as my goal is to do this full time after my contract at the school ends in August. I have not registered self employed yet (obviously fully insured though). That is my next step-how does it work when you have an additional job too?

Question for me is (same boat here) how many customers would you need on average to be able to live of it. Being able to pay the rent ?
Take the figure that you need to live on and the figure you make per client times up the figure per client untill you reach your needed figure and however many clients that is that's your figure :)

I.e need 250 a week

£10 per client

= 10 X 25 = 250 :)

Sorry for the late reply ! Yes I have a weakened job. Which fits in around my family life. I feel like I want to get to a level where I feel really proud of my work before I do it on clients. I do take pride in doing it on friends and family as well. I think it's completely different working from home /mobile then starting a new career full time . I hope by next year to stop the weekend job the target is to make what I would at my current job . I feel I have a few hurdles to jump over first with getting my confidence and skills up. I might buy a practice hand . I have been up loading on instragram too my name is Makeupbystephaniefrances . What's your fb page I will like it. I know we live in different areas but other people can see if I like or comment on stuff on your page .

Hi everyone!

I have just completed a brief of mail courses and a couple more yet to do. I intend to go self employed as mobile nail tech. How did you go about setting up as a business? My main concern is about spending lots of money on becoming a business and then not getting enough clients and failing after a few months! Once I have established myself I hope to add in more beauty treatments such as facials, eyebrows, eyelashes, massages and waxing (over time). I'm so nervous as I've never run a business and I too have spent the last 12 years since I was 18 in a completely different job! At the minute I'm just working part time in my regular job and hope to build up enough trade to one day give that up completely!! I feel like it's a minefield but hoping it's a lot easier than I think at the minute to get started!! Eeek! Good luck to you both, you sound very clued up! Hope you can through some advice this way too!
I feel nervous too it's because we want to sucess. What I am doing is charging a smaller rate and telling friends I am doing for less until I get my speed up. I have been getting friends /family to come to me pretty much every evening asking for a small fee. I feel it helps to get used to how it would be like when clients come over.

I think we just need to push ourselves we know what we are capable of and we are good at what we do otherwise we wouldn't be doing it [emoji4] that is a good idea just build up slowly, practice more and don't charge too high at the beginning.

Me! I'm working full time at the moment in a non beauty job that I hate. I have completed upto l3 at college and am now planning my mobile business with the aim to make enough money to not return to my other job after the school summer hols. I am just beginning to get bookings and have an appointment next week about how to set up self employed. Xxx

This is the exact same boat I'm in at the moment, I've got my driving test booked for in June with the hope to set up a mobile business from then once my current contract technically ends in my currently boring office job that is just not me at all. I am a mum of a 3 yr old and am currently looking into getting ready to either go mobile or I have the opportunity to rent a room in a hair salon. I just have concerns on where to start, and what to do first. I have a few bits, but I'm stuck with do I advertise my services and see what happens or order every single item I need and just hope I get the appointments.
I am also looking into additional courses to get me caught with up to date treatments, I trained at college 5 years ago so am a bit apprehensive.
Who would be the best place to get advise from do you know? I just feel that if I keep putting it off I'll never do it, but now would be the perfect time for to take the plunge and do something I love to do.
Any advise?

Thanks

Hi Geeks!

I am very much in the same boat too. I have just finished my Level III nail Tech, about to commence LIII massage route beauty and have attended other accredited trainings so am able to offer other treatments.

I am still working 3 days a week and have been lucky to secure an additional job in a salon two evenings a week. I have a room at home and have been going out mobile, but too am struggling with time to fit it all in. When do you make the call to give up the old job???

I am finding that maybe I started with my process too low and def. the case when out mobile. I don't know how you all will plan your prices etc but you lose so much time when mobile travelling and setting up.

I have only been using a facebook group page and have a few clients from this.

I would be interested in any tips and problem solving too x

Hi everyone, I'm following with interest as I'm training in Holistics and thinking about offering some beauty treatments. I started a course in beauty therapy when I first left school (a long time ago!) but got talked out of it by my parents. Love how I'm now coming back to it, it feels just right!
Much luck to you all,
Kelly xxx

Good luck to all of you who are just starting out.

My biggest piece of advice would be to set your prices at a reasonable level and if you give any discounts, whilst you're getting up to speed etc, then make sure people know they are for a limited time only.

I was a nightmare for giving everyone a discount at the beginning and it's hard to stop once you've started.

20 years later I'm a lot better [emoji23]

Well done kelly.p for getting back into it good luck and go for it x :)

Thank you for the advice redduck. I will keep that in mind [emoji4]

Love reading all the advice in this thread as I'm about to start my Level 2 in Beauty and hope to go mobile. :)

Hi All... Im also in the same position... I am really focused and determined to make my business a success... I will be training in SPMU (microblading) in September and the course just can't come quick enough. I would say rather that do loads of different things to beguin with make sure you are (in your eyes) fantastic at each individual treatment then you will build yourself a good reputation.. I am going to specialise in the eyebrows department and the extent of research I have done has given me a massive amount of confidence. There is an outstanding sticky thread on the first business page called Ways To Promote Your Business I would recommend you all to have a read as I have now put together pages and pages of ways to promote myself it really was fantastic to read and again strengthen my confidence. I think it's all about getting your name out there and be a bit different to your competition... research people that do same or simlar treatments to you to get an idea on prices etc. Get a FB page set up and show your work on there.... get people to like and share it and never be afraid to ask for a little review from your customers to build your portfolio aswell as your confidence.... if you are confident and determined to succeed then you will... this is my mind-set and what will push me forward. Good luck to you all x

I have just recently got my own salon after 16 years as a hairdresser working for other salons or just renting chairs or doing it from home...it's very scary at the minute as I feel I've gone into partnership with the total wrong person :( xx

Yeah me, I have a room in my house I just started using, but still work full time, as not earn enough to do this full time. I live in hope though.

Hi all

What a great thread:)

Hairlady, sorry to hear you feel that way about who you have set up with I hope that has got better for you.

I thought i would post an update not sure if it will help anyone but here goes.

I had been working 3 jobs..... still am. But i have just resigned from the office job! So as if the 12th August i will be fully self employed. I have rented a room in a unisex hair salon and have been juggling to squeeze as many clients in when and where i can. So my week kinda looks like this:

Monday weds fri office job then evening in my salon.
Tues thurs in my salon followed by evening in another salon for experience.
Saturday my salon all day and late into the evening.
Sunday - family day...... o_O nope still booking in clients on a sunday too.

So all in all its exausting so i took the leap.

I have heaps still to learn and so much to get sorted but the best thing that i negotiated was to work outside of salon hours in the salon. This has helped me get regular clients. Don't get me wrong i still do not have enough but if i dont make more time i won't be able to fit anymore in.

I have only advertised on fb and not needed to go further afield. But if i did i couldnt fit them in. So now is the time to the plunge.

I wish you all well and keep going you WILL get there :):)
