It seems that women are not the only species to be susceptible to the power of celebrity and the trends that it purports. A new study has revealed that over a quarter of men use tanning products inspired by the like of (lord help us!) Joey Essex.
A surprising 27% of men admitted to using the products which is only two per cent less than women in the 16-24 age category. The tanning market, which is worth £60 million a year in the UK, is benefitting from men taking up the trend. The study also revealed that men are more likely to use salon spray tans and oral tanning supplements.
Roshida Kahnom, Senior Personal Care Analyst at Mintel, said, "As stars from shows such as The Only Way is Essex popularise self-tans, and even in some cases launch their own ranges, self-tanning remains fashionable for young people.
"High usage of self-tanning products amongst young men suggests that they may be aspiring to recreate looks inspired by celebrities such as Mark Wright.
'With summer becoming a distant memory, and as the nation gears up for a wet winter, our research suggests that young men are looking to extend the summer look with a year round tan."
While this is great news for the tanning industry, it's bad news for the general public. It is possible to do a decent job of at-home tanning if you take all day preparing, don't wear any clothes for twenty four hours, or sit or lie down on anything and make a substantial sacrifice to the God of tanning but, more often than not, at-home tans are glaringly obvious, patchy, orange and you can bet your tan lines that the TOWIE boys don't do their own.
Am I the only one who remembers Dale Winton that was NOT a good look.
ps. this applies to girls too.
Until then geek on!
