Hello there! I was wondering if anyone can offer advice on what kind of training I should get to reach my career goals. I am a 25 year old college graduate with a degree in design, but I wish to do makeup for live entertainment (Broadway, circus shows). I am also open to other areas that would allow me to dramatic, out of the ordinary makeup. The problem is I don’t know much about the industry and what training I would need to be a competitive candidate.

I am now saving money to move to Los Angeles (I am currently in SF Bay Area) for training in cosmetology. I figure cosmetology would cover all the basics, and being in Los Angeles would help me get started in show business. So my questions are:

  • Is cosmetology the right training for my goals? If not, what would best prepare me?
  • Colleges vs. private institutes – what’s the difference? Large institutes such as Marinello – good or bad?
  • Would a move to Los Angeles increase my chances of getting my feet wet in show business?
  • If I fail utterly, are there similar career tracks?

Thanks in advance!
