Hi,

I'm new to posting so apologies if this is in the wrong place.

I'm unsure what to do and really looking for honest opinions. I trained in hair and beauty in the mid 80's. however, I didn't stick at it and moved onto a different career path.
When I hit 40 I decided to retrain in hairdressing and completed my NVQ lvl 2 and really enjoyed it this time around. Over the past few years I've also done some additional beauty courses, some as refreshers to what I'd done previously and others that I'd never covered in my previous training.

My dilemma is I'm 50 now and seriously considering doing an ITEC lvl 2 & 3 in beauty therapy. My DH is not really against it but he's not entirely behind me. He says he's playing devils advocate, which of course I understand.

So, I'm here to ask for other opinions and thoughts on it. Please be as honest as you like, I'm a mum and a grandma so used to taking abuse lol x

Rubbish!!! Get out there and do it!! :D

You have a great foundation already so will be refreshing skills rather than starting from scratch. Yes some of your classmates will be much younger but there is no beating experience and maturity.

If you can dream it you can do it

Good luck :D

If your dreams don't scare you they aren't big enough

Defiantly go for it...if not you will regret it.

Best of luck xx

I'm 46 and and it's the best decision I've made.
I qualified 2 years ago and have never looked back. I'm so passionate about what I do my clients comment on it and tell others.

I expected my college classmates to be all young glamorous girls and I felt very self conscious until the class started. It was a very mixed group and we all got on very well.

If it's what you want to do then go for it x

I think now is a really exciting time to be in the beauty industry, clients are so much more in to looking after themselves these days and the new products and treatments that are fantastic.
If it's something you really want to do ...do it lots of clients will want to come to you because you are who you are. [emoji4]

I agree with all the others! It's never too late and I actually think you will have a lot advantages as you have a different view and perception on life and it can help a lot when you take on something new or expand on it! Go for it [emoji122]

Realistically, salons aren't going to be falling over themselves to employ you so you need to be thinking about your employment options afterwards and also whether you're willing to try self employment.

The beauty industry still favours the young and the beautiful so you need to plan ahead and give yourself options, otherwise it can easily become an expensive indulgent hobby!

(This comes from someone who retrained in hairdressing in my forties.)

Go for it [emoji4] my mum went back to college as a mature student (not to do beauty) but absolutely loved her 2 years there. As a salon owner, I definitely wouldn't discriminate - if anything, for me maturity and experience is what I'm looking for! [emoji102][emoji4][emoji87] don't doubt yourself - sometimes it's good to do the thing that scares you good luck! x

Do you need to do a full NVQ2 and 3?

If you have the qualification, what you need is skills building, and most people need that when they come out of college anyway.

We offer skill building courses, as do a lot of other places. It may be worth looking at that rather than full NVQs.

And no, you're not too old. Never too old x

All my team are over 40, I see it as a real asset to my business. I wanted to create a team of all different ages but it just seems to have worked out this way, my clients think it's great as the largest age group I have is 30's - 50's.
