Any ideas why my client's toenail is growing back unattached?

She gave them a trim herself a few months ago and her hand slipped, cutting off a few mm too deep on one side. We can't figure out why the toenail isn't growing back along with the hyponychium (clear/attached) and is growing as a free edge/"white" instead. So her toenail's free edge is completely crooked. Anyone have experience with this?

I’d say this is quite normal and to be anticipated. Over time, if you keep the free edge fairly short, the nail bed will reattach itself, but it will take months to years.

My Instagram has gotten flooded with posts like these, all accounts from Japan claiming to be able to hack people's hyponychiums to grow longer. Is this photoshop? Visual effects? Or is there a way to do it?

Looks like chipped pink gel polish over very grubby nails to me. These nails are not healthy. Look at the reddened swelling around the ring finger.
