What does an apprenticeship hairdresser do? What does it pay? Do you go to college? Is it a good route to go down?

Any other information or personal opinions will be greatly appreciated?

My assistants go to college once a fortnight the national pay rate for an apprentice is 2.60 an hour. You will be expected to clean the salon shampoo clients clean and tidy the salon it's hard work but it the best route to go down of your serious about entering the industry x

Hi I get payed the minimum wage which Is £95 a week. I go to college once a week. My duties are to clean the salon, reception duties, assist the stylists. It is very tiring and can get tedious but it is well worth as you are getting experience all day everyday. I would definitely say it's a better option than just going to college. Hope this helps :)

Much better route to go down than full time college hands down.

Being honest it's not as glam as people expect, even being fully qualified isn't as glamorous as people expect, it's hard work, it's a long time on the feet and it's bloody great! I absolutely love it all, including having to wash the pots.
If you really want to do it, go for it, enjoy it and make the most of the experience.
Hairdressing has one of the highest numbers of happy workers in the world, and why wouldn't we be happy when we make so many people so happy with what we do for them. Xoxo

All of the above is correct some apprentices go to college once a week. Don't forget the point of an apprenticeship is to receive training on the job s make sure that the salon you choose has agreed to train you. Training is essential it will keep you motivated and give you experience. You have to bring models in to get the experience dolls head training is not enough xx

As I find money is essential at the moment due to moving etc. would it be better to go to college part time and work part time at a normal wage so I have a half decent income or would I then struggle when I get out of college with no hands on experience?

There are pros and cons for both options. I went to college full-time (2 and a half days) and worked extremely hard (also had my son at the end of 2nd year and returned 4 months later for level 3 full time) worked in a couple of salons over the 2 and a half years at college and worked my backside off and finished college to be offered a part time job in the salon I was in during level 3, which is where I am now :) - definately glad I went to college right through!
