Hi everyone, I have been working self employed in a hair salon since April and things are slowly picking up. I have a few regular clients and have offers up for Christmas.
A few weeks ago a beauty therapist joined the salon on a self employed basis and I was assured she wouldn't be doing nails expect for her friends and family because she needed to pass some assessments.
She put nail treatments on her price list for clients and her prices were cheaper than mine so I told the manager, she said it was just her friends and family but I said because they're on her price list clients will be booked I with me and then ask why the prices has suddenly gone up? The manager then said she would have a word with her.
A few dirty looks later, I assume the manager had spoken to her about it but today a client of the hairdressers went upstairs and she went into the beauty therapists room and asked if her daughter could have her nails done, I assumed she meant by me because a) she wanted her nails doing and b) I have an offer on at the moment for child's file and polish with Christmas nail art so thought the beauty therapist would direct her to me.
No such luck, I went to the reception area a while later and the little girl was showing off her freshly painted nails.
I'm so angry and a little upset because the hairdressers and receptionist know she went to the beauty therapist and they haven't said a word. I just really hope she didn't use my offer to do them and now I don't know whether to look elsewhere after Christmas or go straight to the owner about it? I don't want to whine about it all the time but I think I'm being fair? I only do nails, so shouldn't I get nail clients?
It's really put a downer in me and made me feel insecure that they will ask me to leave anyway now she is here :(

Hi
This doesn't sound good.

If you've been there 8 months, your income is from nails and you were assured from the manager that the new beauty therapist would NOT do nails then you have every right to be raving.

She seems to be behaving a bit sneakily but it also sounds like the manager is not being assertive enough to deal with it for one reason or another.
If I was you I would put my grievance in writing to the manager and see what happens, if you're not happy with the outcome then new year - new start somewhere else.

Its not fair on you to be paying for a table and worrying about the new therapist taking your clients or even wondering whether the salon want you to leave. Hope you manage to get it sorted out x

Thank you, I do worry because the manager is friends with the beauty therapists mum, who set up everything for her to start a career, so that concerns me but when I told her about the price list she seemed like she was on my side because I'm the nail technician I should do nails.
I will bring up what happened this morning and see what they say although I know they're already aware. I'm so annoyed this has happened and this close to Christmas too.
And I have been raving, very loudly just in my own head haha
Thanks for the advice xx

If it comes down to who's mates with who then you could be fighting a losing battle.

I can imagine that this is infuriating when you've worked so hard to get clients. I would get some cards printed with your contact details to give to your regulars and hand them out once you've found a local room.

There's nothing wrong with a beauty therapist doing nails but in this instance it's not fair due to a conflict of interest.

I'm hoping they'll be fair, my auntie works there too that's how they knew about me and asked if I'd be interested.
I'm fine with beauty therapists doing nails but I was told this one wouldn't be because I'm there to do nails xx

This is a potentially bad situation a certainly a conflict of interest particularly as you were given a promise up front. Bad situation brewing. The owner better sort it out pronto or I for one would be out that door. I do not like dishonesty or being told lies.

Later on I overhear the beauty therapist tell the manager a client went upstairs and asked her to do her daughters nails and instead of the manager telling her that it should have been a client for me I heard her ask 'what did you do?' In an over excited give-me-the-gossip way.
Which seems a little nasty, so I'm going to talk to the owner when she's in and go from there .
Thank you for your help everyone :) It's helpful to read other people views, my sister wanted to come down pack up my stuff and tell them where to go haha
Xx

Hi,
So the owner came in to see me, and gave me the impression she doesn't really care and we can battle it out for clients. It seems she doesn't realise this could affect the salons image so I'm gonna just concentrate on my own business over Christmas and will probably look elsewhere in the new year :) thanks again for everyone's advice xx

Just an update :)
I've been offered a desk in a salon across the road from where I live, so because I don't drive that's a really good thing :D
Its a busier area than where I am now and has a couple nail bars already but there's enough people to go around I hope!
Xx
