You are right though, it is making me unhappy! Not to the point where I am obviously depressed at work and bringing others down with me as someone posted previously!! But more to the point where I dread going into work and have about an hours conversation with my partner as soon as i walk in the door about what a horrible set of nails ive had to do!!

I'll give you the same advice someone (a horrible boss of mine, in a horrible job) gave me.

Lifes to long to be unhappy in a job you dislike...well that's the only decent thing she ever said to me & i took her advice (i don't think she thought i would) :lol: i gave my notice in the next day and never went back!

Just an idea but a friend of mine, her husband owns a very very nice tattoo place and most of his clients are women and he said he was going to do a permenant make-up course because he gets so many requests for it. Maybe you could enquire in those sort of place's because it's those sorts of places where people will enquire aswell.

What are you waiting for? If I had spent £15,000 on SPMU I would be out there earning back my investment. If you cannot afford to rent why not ask local salons, health studios etc if you can visit once a month. Why not do beauty mobile to get the money in? Ther are actually quite a few options - go seek them out.:hug:

Yep. You definitely need to be making the most of your permanent make-up training.

Another very important thing to consider is "d£/dt" namely, the amount of cash you can make in a given period of time.

Something like permanent make-up, where good practitioners can charge a high fee for say a couple of hours work, offers an excellent way to maximise this. So going self-employed doing permanent make-up could mean you could work a lot less hours doing something you really enjoy, and still earn more money than being employed by a salon like you are at the moment.

Definitely worth considering!

You trained as a beauty therapist and not a nail technician so i can completely understand where you are coming from.
When you took the job you were taken on solely as a beautician.
Nail technician is a completely different job and expecting you to do them is, in my opinion, unfair.
As a salon owner i expect to be able to offer a whole range of treatments to my clients and i take on people who are good at what they do.
As i've mentioned in posts before, my staff make my business what it is today and without them i wouldn't be where i am today. I want my staff to be happy as happy staff makes a happy atmosphere in my salon.
Doing nails is a skill that requires dedication and a hell of a lot of practice. To expect you to do them without the appropriate training is absurd, especially as she has other staff trained in them.
After taking my salon on i was in a lot of debt but i love my job and did whatever it took to keep myself afloat.
My husband and i discussed the possibility of selling our house if we had to. Luckily i'm doing ok now but what i'm trying to say is that you need to decide what you want from life.
We spend a third (more like a half for me!), of our life at work and if it is making you miserable, it then impinges on the rest of your life.
Is it really worth making yourself that unhappy?

I agree with Angelina completely.
Good luck with whatever you choose to do. You have decisions to make.
Pick yourself up and do what YOU want to do. You should never have to be in the position where you feel uncomfortable or intimidated so I say tell em to stuff the job and stay positive and focused on your career.

Can I just put in my ten penneth here? You are trained in something that is very specialised - it is fantastic and you should be proud of yourself!

How about contacting the hospitals both private and NHS within the ornocology departments where many women who have had recontstructive surgery may need nipple thingy (sorry senior moment on proper word!). Also what about burns victims who may have lost eyebrows? Is just a thought. Also contact clinics who really get lots of women in who are looking for enhancing treatments and new eyebrows and eye liner etc can help make a difference too.

If its any consolation I hate nails (not natural treatments) so much so that I did not do them in my NVQ3, I like to leave that to the far more talented people.

Dont get down too much, life is too short, chin up and write things down, is very carthetic, look at pros and cons of your job and what you want from any future moves be that on your own or for someone else. There are jobs around it depends if you want to move to them too.

You do need specific training for areola reconstruction techniques though; I don't think you would be able to offer this if it wasn't part of your original permanent make-up course unless you do additional training in this area. From what I've heard from being a model for this procedure, there are differences in technique compared with facial permanent make-up, hence the need for specific training for areolae.

I think you've had a bit of a raw deal on this thread.
Now if my beautician said she didn't want to do facials as she didn't like them, then yes, i would have a problem with that as facials are part of her job.
I wouldn't expect my beautician to suddenly start cutting someone's hair and i wouldn't expect my nail tech to start doing beauty treatments-that would be silly! So why would i expect my beautician to start doing nail extensions
My staff have their own insurance. My nail tech has insurance to cover her to do nails. My hairdresser has insurance to cover her to do hair and my beautician has insurance to cover her to do beauty treatments.
They all have to have different insurance.
Why?
3 different insurances because they are 3 different jobs!!!!!!!!!
I would most definitely have another word with your boss and tell her you are not happy with this arrangement and that she will be losing clients in the long run when they go somewhere else to get their nails done by a qualified tech.

I work in an opticians, I wont say which one and things go on there that could seriously affect the health and well being of patients eyes. With no offence to any of you good people I really think waxing legs is unlikely to make you go blind.

We query it, or complain the boss says what I quoted above. At the end of the day none of us do leave because a) we cant afford to and b) there are no other jobs about atm, I know Ive tried. Although Yes we have had investigations into our store although nothing has ever been proven. :irked:

All of that though is a mute point. And only in reply to my job not affecting anyone.

I didnt actually say the girl should leave, I was quoting my boss in a rather cynical way as, as I said he is unique.

In my defence, I had no clue what you done as a main job and of course waxing legs won't make you go blind!

But..................the whole point of this thread is the posters position within the beauty industry and what she is trained to do and what not to. That is all plain and simple and no reflection on you. I hope that this clears that up.:hug:

I completely understand training is needed to do certain jobs, guess its the same in most proffesions.

Oh and the whole dont shout at me comment is kinda a reflex thing.... I get shouted at a lot in my job (as everything seems to be my fault even if I wasnt there or know nothing about it) lol makes me nervous all the time. It wasnt a *** at you.

Sorry to hear about the troubles your having at the Salon. I too am an employer and ur boss is taking TOTAL advantage of you. If a client were to complain,your leaving yourself very vulnerable as all your boss needs to say is that he/she were unaware that you were performing treatments that ur not qualified to perform and then it gets very messy!
I would suggest that you leave asap as it's clearly killing ur passion for the job.

Leading on to.....we are a very busy,well established salon in Clapham (right opp. station)who are looking to rent out a beauty room full/part time. Our rates are reasonable and neogotiable. So why not take the plunge??

Years ago I worked in a salon exactly like this.I was only level 2 qualified at the time and this did NOT include electrical facials or electrical treatments.

All of a sudden 4 of us were 'trained',for want of a better word in electrical treatments.The machine was state of the art and cost thousands of pounds.We had 4 hours training and after that were expected to start booking in clients with us for treatments using this machine.The treatments were costly(and rightly so,if carried out by a qualified therapist)

Anyway,I hated the deceit.I didn't feel confident in using the machine nor the process of measuring accurately or wireing them up using the positive/negative connections.It was horrendous and I would dread coming into the salon each morning and seeing a client booked in with me for this treatment.

The salon was unprofessional and I found that I was being asked to do more and more treatments that I was not qualified or insured to do.This resulted in me being miserable and in the end I decided that I had to go for my own sanity.I had no job to go to but thankfully I could afford to leave and got another job in a lovely salon only 4 weeks later.

Whereas I agree therapists can't pick and choose the jobs they want/like to do I think it's appalling that any manager/salon owner would expect their therapists to do jobs they aren't capable,insured or qualified in.I am lucky,I enjoy everything I do.I'm often asked by clients what jobs I hate doing and can hand on heart say,' I dont hate any'.

Im level 3 qualified now and have been for many years and to think of a therapist doing a lot of the treatments involved in level 3 is quite a scary thought.


I suggest you look for another job.One that gives you satisfaction and makes you glad you did all that training for.We are worth so much more.Good luck.:hug:

Im not really sure where to post this, so apologies if i have put it in the in correct section.

I need some advice .....

I work in a salon and absolute hate it there!! It's extremely bitchy and I just cannot get along with a couple of people I work with, they constantly moan & basically treat me like a child.

I have been doing beauty a number of years and am qualified up to level 3 and in extra treatments such as Laser hair removal.

However, I am not qualified to do some treatments that the salon offer and I have no interest in learning to do them as I feel it is something that requires skill and lots of practice, and a bit of a long story, but I have too much other stuff on my plate at the moment. However, because the salon will not turn away the money if someone asks for it, they force me to do it!! Even though there are 3 other therapists that can do it!

I have had meetings with both the manager and owner and said I am not prepared to do this and this has been going on the last few months. However, even after having pretty much, arguments over it, they are still booking me clients in for treatments I am not qualified to do!!!!!

This is really getting me down, to the point that I do not want to go in to work!!!

I cannot stand the fact that I am doing something I am not qualified to do and am giving the client a bad service!!

The pay is awful, I'm not aloud any holiday until the winter, I work back to back with no breaks or lunch, they book me in too many treatments for the time ( if that makes sense) so i end up running over and they don't pay me after the time I am due to finish, even though sometimes, I will be there an hour after my set time to finish!!

I know there is an easy option here, to just go and get another job, but I have been looking for nearly 3 months and there is absolutely nothing around at the moment!!! Unfortunately, I need the money too much at the moment to just leave and I know if I was to go, they would cause problems as I have been told by numerous amounts of people that they are 'dodgy!'

Has anyone got any advice?!

This is everyting I hate about the Beauty Industry, been there before hun and I walked away from it (was in a position where I could) it's not fair on the clients or you! I agree with one of the posts, you should def think about going self employed, I have and it's the best thing I ever did, if you have semi=permanent make-up under your belt you couldn't wish for anymore, you could extend that to para-medical and help pst op people....go for it!
