Well, what a lovely bunch of non judgemental people we have on here.
Particularly in an industry such as ours we should respect the wishes of those who want to alter their appearance. We all know how modification of our appearance can make a person feel better about themselves, and we also know that what is appealing to one person is distinctly unappealing to another. The attitude of "I dont like it and dont think it's normal, therefore it's wrong" is quite frankly narrow minded and shallow.
Has anyone on here even bothered to look into the reasons why these people have had these modifications? Certainly I know in the case of the cat man it is related to his religious belief concerning re-incarnation, does that mean he's wrong in the head and should seek counselling, or does it mean he is deeply passionate and commited to his religious views? Either way, who are we to comment and make insulting comments on a forum that can be viewed by anybody who has internet access?
It was said on a recent thread that on this site, we should act like professionals and not be judgemental, and after reading this thread I find it disappointing that I am amongst a community of hypocrites. We are beauty professionals, we should understand the need for people to modify their appearance to feel better about themselves, and in situations where we find it odd and dont understand the need to make certain modifications we should reserve our judgement unless we really actually know what we are talking about. I find it particularly offensive that someone has even chosen to describe one of these individuals using a four letter expletive of the most derogatory meaning (even though asterisks have been used to censor it).
It's there in black and white (ie print) that they've gone to extreme measures. This Morning website said:The world famous Cat and Lizardman have gone to extreme measures to alter their physical appearance to reflect their animal identities.
We are all entitled to our opinions. I perhaps more than anyone have always respected peoples rights to express their opinions even if I dont agree with them. Never before now has a thread actually made me angry, but I will say what I have to say here and wont look at this one again because I really am astounded.
Having an opinion is one thing, it's fine to say that you dont like something. Being insulting because you dont understand someones wishes to modify their appearance is another. I cant recall who now, but someone on here has even described these people as looking "like a right t**t", that's not just stating an opinion, that's downright offensive.
Anna, you say in your opinion that there is something psychologically wrong - Have you met these people? Are you qualified to make that statement? Maybe they have got psychological issues, but I'm certainly not qualified to make that statement and so I wouldnt dream of making such statements on a public forum.
On the issue of this being a professional forum, you know as well as I do that you dont need to be a professional to access this forum. Anyone can view it, and furthermore, certain keywords if typed into google will bring up threads from this site.
I'll tell you why this has made me so angry. Those who know me know that I am part of the goth social scene, where it is quite the norm for people to modify their appearance in the most extreme ways in a lot of cases. It is our choice to do so, we do NOT do it for people to point and stare, and there is nothing wrong with us psychologically. Many of us are quite used to having abuse hurled at us as we walk down the street because of the way we choose to look, it might be that individuals opinion that we look weird, but does that give that person a right to be offensive just because that;s their opinion? Of course it doesnt.
Last year, a member of our community was kicked to death for the way she looked. Her name was Sophie and if I was any good at posting links I would post a link to her appeal on here, although I strongly suggest you google it and read about not only her story, but the stories of many people who choose an alternative look who have been subjected to ridicule, prejudice and violence. We are now campaigning for it to become an offence to incite violence and/or hatred against subcultural groups - i.e we want to stamp out all ignorance which is displayed simply because a persons appearance is out of the norm, however slight or extreme it might be. This campaign is going very well but we will never make any real progress until we can make people understand that it is not acceptable to ridicule people because you dont happen to approve of their choice of appearance.
You cannot insult people because of their appearance, and then defend that action by saying "It's only a joke", "We're only having a laugh", "Its our right to state our opinion". That does not make it right. Just out of interest, how would you respond to a transsexual who has had major surgery to completely transform themselves? Is it normal? Would you ridicule them? You might not want to do it, and you might not understand it, but you would respect their right to change their body in this way. Yes, I know this is a different scenario from changing yourself into a cat or a lizard, but both are extreme body modification, the difference is that we have empathy and understanding for the person who wants a sex change, we dont have understanding of those who choose to modify their appearance in cases like the cat or lizard man. JUST BECAUSE WE DONT UNDERSTAND IT DOESNT MEAN WE HAVE THE RIGHT TO RIDICULE IT.
I really do hope you look up the Sophie campaign and read about what can come of nurturing the attitude of ignorance toward those who choose to look different from the norm.
Would it be ok for someone to walk around naked then...?
I'm totally good with that!!! Can I suggest that the following peeps be *MADE* to strip off (preferably permanently) :-
David Tennant
Keanu Reeves
Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails
George Clooney - we need to keep Mrs Clooney happy!
Oooh and I would have loved Heath Ledger as the Joker to have been included... he will be sadly missed.

There is nothing wrong with people looking different from the norm...(how boring would it be if were all the same...if there werent people that stepped outside the box so to speak) but the line has to be drawn when it comes to EXTREME modifying....this isnt the norm....I dont want to understand it...I dont want it to be normal....I dont want my son to grow up and come home with a body part either missing or irreversibly butchered because 'its a normal thing to do these days!'We are all entitled to our opinions. I perhaps more than anyone have always respected peoples rights to express their opinions even if I dont agree with them. Having an opinion is one thing, it's fine to say that you dont like something. Being insulting because you dont understand someones wishes to modify their appearance is another. While I might not understand why some people would choose to do certain things, such as covering themselves entirely with tattoos (as one example)...my view is that...that is their choice..I wouldnt do it myself and i dont think it looks good in anyway shape or form but my general thought on things such as these are 'each to their own'..I certainly dont have a problem with it...as far as zombie boy goes...hes covered himself in tattoos...but hey thats up to him...what I do take objection to in zombies case is what his tattoos are...he is trying to make himself look like a rotting corpse...his tattoos are of the most repulsive things...in his interview he talks about having his nose and ears removed because it looks cool!
I cant recall who now, but someone on here has even described these people as looking "like a right t**t" (yep that was me...I was referring to the sight of catman sat on phil n ferns sofa!) that's not just stating an opinion, that's downright offensive.

Maybe they have got psychological issues, but I'm certainly not qualified to make that statement and so I wouldnt dream of making such statements on a public forum. Well as it doesnt take Sigmund freud to state the obvious then im quite happy to state on here that I think there are serious psychological issues surrounding these people...im not diagnosing...simply sharing my opinion within this discussion. Zombie states himself how unhappy he was before he started getting tatts...how he wanted to kill everyone amongst other things.

I totally agree with you...this was a terrible and tragic case and it should not happen to anyone...especially because of their appearance HOWEVER i dont see why the focus in your campain is on subcultures...the kind of people that would beat someone to death for the hell of it would do that to anyone regardless of what cultural society they belong to....they will simply 'in their own mind' find any reason to start trouble....obviously i dont know the full details of the case..but if it hadnt of been sophie and her boyfriend....its more than likely it would of been somebody else....maybe because they were fat, thin, ugly, pretty etc etc that gang were obviously out for trouble.

That does not make it right. Just out of interest, how would you respond to a transsexual who has had major surgery to completely transform themselves? Is it normal? no it isnt 'normal' though is it! normally you are born either a female or a male and you stay that way....thats not to say i have a problem with these people...these people do not choose to modify their bodies lightly...they are born with a serious psychological issue...I feel for them actually and i dont object to them having the op...this is partly because I know that these people have to have rigorous and lengthy assessments, counselling and so on....they cant just nip somewhere and have the op can they....they have to go through hell for a number of years to prove that its what they want/have to have in order to live happily....so in my eyes this kind of body change is a far cry from the things seen on the bizarre website Would you ridicule them? You might not want to do it, and you might not understand it, but you would respect their right to change their body in this way. Yes, I know this is a different scenario from changing yourself into a cat or a lizard, but both are extreme body modification, the difference is that we have empathy and understanding for the person who wants a sex change, we dont have understanding of those who choose to modify their appearance in cases like the cat or lizard man. You are speaking all the time about appearance....the issue for me is not appearance as such....yeah ive had a bit of a laugh about it but hey if you wanna tatt yourself into a lizard or tiger or whatever fine....i think we can all safely say that its not normal or rational behaviour really but hey its their life so fine.....what I absolutely find repulsive is the extreme modifying where these people are having amputations of limbs...arms, legs, fingers, nose, ear, tongue splitting....penis splitting!!! and the list goes on.....mainly because they think it looks cool!! or because its their religion/cultural....er no...dont use that as an excuse to justify it...you have some kind of mental abnormaility or seriously wrong upbringing.. if you want to remove a perfectly good limb because you think it would look cool!!! HELLO SOMEONE CALL THE MEN IN WHITE COATS!!! and what is equally disgraceful is that they are allowed to pay someone to do this ????? wtf!
I really do hope you look up the Sophie campaign and read about what can come of nurturing the attitude of ignorance toward those who choose to look different from the norm.
