Starting to take Christmas bookings but last year we had loads of people book in advance and then they never turned up, even though we sent around text reminders. I definitely want to take deposits this year but how do you guys actually do it. For people coming in the salon I take 20% of their treatment as a deposit but it's people that book through Facebook and over the phone that I'm not sure on.

Do you tell them to pop into the salon, or do it via paypal?

Thanks :)

I ask them to deposit it via paypal so they are protected and so I can keep track on who has paid their deposit. I ask for just a £5 deposit per treatment booked. last year not one of my clients cancelled after this. I made sure to let them know the deposit was never refundable so as soon as they booked that was it they wouldnt see that £5 again and explained that if in the event they notified me they were unable to make it at least 3 weeks before they could use the £5 against another treatment 1 month after xmas only. I get them to sign an agreement so I am fully covered.

Thing is with paypal, if they open a dispute or do a chargeback PayPal will 99% time give the money back. They don't care about the businesses / retailers. This is why I'd not recommend doing it through PayPal because despite you telling them it's non-refundable it means nothing to PayPal.

What do you suggest is the best way to take a deposit? I normally take a 25% deposit and use paypal with the assumption that I would be covered lol. Would Bank transfer be better?

Bank transfer is much better or taking debit card with your terminal :)

Hi if you are looking for an online booking option you can take deposits using the Hive system. If you don't have a salon software system in place yet why not try a 30 day free trial of Hive. Regards Kim

So as far as a booking fee goes what is a reasonable amount if it’s none refundable?
