Um, ketosis and ketoacidosis are very different things, although they both involve the breakdown of fats. Ketosis is a normal metabolic process and ketoacidosis is a life threatening condition of particular concern to Type 1 diabetics.
Ketoacidosis is a state of toxicity where there are raised levels of ketones in the blood. This occurs when insulin levels are too low and the liver attempts to restore energy by metabolising fats and proteins due to a lack of available carbs.
Ketosis can quickly develop into ketoacidosis only in certain people, usually those with diabetes or alcoholism. For the normal individual ketogenic diets are useful for weight loss and for controlling epilepsy, and as long as one is receiving all the nutrients they need and monitoring their health this state can be created and maintained with no long term damage to liver and kidney.
