I've been looking at different brands of hard gels, gel polishes etc and planning on getting some to trial.

I've read thread after thread but most talk about length of time they last, removal etc.

I also think an important part is to know the chemicals that are being used in the products. Just because it last 2 weeks doesn't mean it's not good for the nail.

How do you know the chemicals /formula are OK?

This is a genuine question, not a dig... It's something I want to look into but don't know where to start!

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks x

There are not good or bad chemicals, all chemicals are good if used correctly and for the right purpose.

Can you be a bit more specific about what you're trying to understand????

If it's the use of MMA in nail extensions then there is lots of info on here if you search for MMA.

If it cheap/fake/non pro products - then it's more a case of common sense and research, if a 'professional only' suppliers sell a bottle of Gel Polish for £15+ and a similar looking bottle with a different name is available on FB/eBay for £6 it's unlikely to be good quality.

If it's things like using the wrong product at the wrong stage of application (for instance using acetone instead of finishing wipe) then that's the stuff your training should have covered. Your training should have provided a basic knowledge of the right and wrong chemicals/products to get you started.

Does that help?

Hi Trinity

Yes that's very helpful thanks. I'll definitely search for mma on here to understand that more.

I'm fully trained so understand when I should and shouldn't be using certain products. That bits fine.

It's just knowing more about other brands I guess and I'm just trying to find out more which ones are professional only brands.

Thanks again

A 'professional only' brand is one who will only sell to you on production of a training certificate. It takes effort and commitment to protect our trade and integrity so if a supplier is prepared not to sell you their products unless you prove your status then you can pretty much count on their commitment.

There are new up and coming suppliers who may not require copies of certificates in their early days whilst they're finding they're feet and place in the industry but hopefully as they progress they'll become more selective too.

Well done for realising the need for research and understanding, you're protecting your clients and yourself

I think I know what you mean, as in the different formulations and which is kindest to the natural nail/best quality product??

The answer however I don't have, I think it's that classic down to the individual scenario on what they are hoping for in a product.

For instance the difference between a hybrid gel polish and a gel polish is I think the difference in gel content percentage. Which is why certain brands suit certain clients better etc.

I'm waffling a bit and in all honesty need to refresh my own knowledge after a few years out of the industry having children.

Hope someone else can help further xx

Its difficult to know someone what is a professional only brand given you can so easily find names on eBay etc these days... Albeit, it may not be the real product and be a copy. And most companies will say they are a professional company, as you say though it's making sure they only sell to professionals.

I'm trained in cnd and only use CND but interested to test other professional only ones.

Exactly! But I think you may be right, it could be down to the individual.

CND pride themselves on using products which don't harm the nails (when used correctly) but what makes them none harmful and the other brands damaging? Does that make sense!

I just like to know the ins and outs of everything before use. Being trained with CND, I've been taught the science behind it so it's finding that side of it for other brands too.

Perhaps have a read through the Doug Schoon book?

It does cover the science and what makes a "good" nail enhancement etc

Good thinking! I follow his blog but might get his book to have a proper read. Thanks!

I might be the devil's advocate here, but most chemicals used for any kind of nail products are harmful as overexposure to any chemical is bad and can happen, especially with inproper use.

I really like your approach, and I'm the same, I can spend hours researching something. :) I found this document quite interesting on TPO which is one of the chemicals some gel polish brands put in their mixture, in case you are interested https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&s...V0C9tja_2Oe5ajvbg&sig2=3E4NnbJjJvh71v5Zlun-Rg

I personally chose not to use any gel polish containing TPO, purely because I believe if there are alternatives I'd rather use those, but in the end, if a professional products is used by a professional in a professional way, it is going to be safe. I would advice getting the MSDS for your products and start googling the ingredients to build your own opinion and research up. :)

Can acrylic penetrate through the nail plate and enter the bloodstream?

IMO no, because they polymerize and harden so quickly, and there are about 50 layers of dead keratin it would have to penetrate to do so.

Great thank you.

Forgot to ask what about Acetone when used for removals? It's on the skin in parts for a good 10 minutes...can't be good..:-(
