hi need some advice. my aunty had been diagnosed with cancer, but hasnt started chemotherapy yet and they currently dont know if its terminal or not until more tests. can she get her hair done professionally, blonde highlights she wants, will it be ok? she has low immune system after an operation. she really wants it doing let me know thanks

I had a client at college who had cancer, she had highlights and in between colour but I think she was already finished with chemo.

She should check with her doctor first xx

Hi
I work with alot of cancer patients throughout chemo/radiotherapy as we get referrals from force etc.
For me if a client wanted a colour done when theyve just been diagnosed with cancer and have yet to start treatment i simply wouldnt want to colour their hair. Its not just about clients being more sensiive to colour when on medication, but when the bodies fighting something and the immune system is low its hard to tell how the hair/scalp will react to colour.
I think she will find it hard to get a salon happy to colour her hair at this stage in the illness.
I understand it must be hard for somepeople who maybe just want to feel normal for a moment and getting a colour or cut can really boost them up abit but i just wouldnt want to take the risk of it going wrong and causing more added stress to that person.
Maybe your auntie could speak to her consultant and see what they think?
I wish her all the best.
x

thanks for advice. thats what i thought 2 about people not wanting to do it coz of illness. its just shes desperate to get the greys out and want to make her feel as happy as she can by feeling nice dont know what to do?! do u think if i buy a home dye (shes had nice n easy before) and patch test her and if patch test ok me do it for her?????would this be better?

I happily highlight cancer patients. Nothing untoward happens.

With all over colour, the doctors usually tell them when its ok to colour, and we use an organic and mineral colour.

Reality is, you will not make the cancer worse, and making them feel normal again is a fantastic boost.
Because I can cut/sort out wigs, I get a lot of cancer patients, and the first time they can leave my salon without a wig on after chemo usually results in the biggest beaming smile.

Hi!
I was reffering to all over colours i will hi light for clients with cancer but always like to say it could turn out slightly different than normal and this has happened to me before and i def agree with you Persianista, that making a poorly client feel much better by doing their hair is the best bit of job satisfaction ever.x

If its to cover up the root area, and she dosent wash daily, tell her to try hair mascara, that will cover a bit, but will wash out, so special events etc,,, she can feel great.
I'm doing my aunts hair sometime this week to match her wig, got her a colour from holland and Barrett for the all over colour ad went to the warehouse to get her highlights colour, really can't wait to see the transformation, but I'm only doing this as she's had the all clear now, and is on her 4th skin test ( I'm giving her 6 in total over 2 weeks to make sure there is no reaction that could show up later) now. Xoxo

Still going to cap bleach highlight after the all over is done to get the natural hair to match the wig, but as long as it dosent touch the scalp I can't see a problem xoxo
