Hi geeks,

I need some advice re my extensions please. I got no aftercare with them other than don't use the hairdryer too hot near the bonds (they're prebonded). This is the first time i've had them so its all new to me..

Should I be using a special shampoo? Atm i'm using loreal silver shampoo and a Sebastin masque (try to avoid the bonds with the masque) but am finding they are starting to go a bit straggly and I have pulled a couple of them out when i've been brushing my hair :( I only have the sides done and they've only been in for about 8 weeks. I am SO worried about them damaging my own hair. I love them but feel like i've not had them in that long and already i'm about getting them out! I also use argan oil on them and try to go easy with the blow drying.

Please help and so sorry if i've posted this in the wrong section! xx

Did the extensionist who fitted them not give you an aftercare sheet & products to use? Or at least reccomend the correct aftercare for you to buy from them? Some can fall out naturally & these will be refitted when you have your maintanence appointments. You need an oil free shampoo so your bonds wont soften which can cause them to slide out. Have you spoke to the extensionist about this? Hth xx

I agree, the stylist should supply you with correct aftercare information. Hair extension aftercare is vital, we wrote a blog on it here. Theres a little information there, i can email you an aftercare form if you like :)

ScottRosam I had a look at your blog which was great and would love if you could send me an aftercare sheet please ;)

I never got an aftercare sheet or any advice tbh, I asked loads of questions (probably because i'm particular and only want thee best for my hair!) I think I will buy an extension shampoo and conditioner as the extensionist said I am maybe washing my hair too much. I spoke to her last week so am going to have some more refitted free of charge but I don't think she usually has to do this :-S

Im just soo worried they're damaging my hair as the ones that have come out have come straight from the root!
Thanks for the advice guys! xx

Any reputable technician would ALWAYS do a consultation, provide extensive aftercare advise (if not in deed products). Hair extensions when fitted correctly are not damaging to your own hair. (Did you have a consultation and if so you can ask for a copy of this - all technicians should do these similarily to when you attend a hair dressers/beauty salon for the first time - and also from a legal point of view!!!
Some clients may experience hair loss at the root from post pregnancy, or other factors, BUT all of these would be identified in the consultation process. Recommended wear time of hair extensions is up to 12 weeks due the growth of your own natural hair V's weight of attachment, clients may lose a number of bonds through this time but NOT from the root!!!. I would ask her to remove any where the section size has diminished too much to support the weight of the strand and to replace them. I would also ask why in her opinion they have come out from the root??? Ask her to provide you with some recommended products (stay clear of X10 as these can dry out the hair). Maybe ask which hair she uses to fit and then we can suggest some good products to you x

Thanks a lot for your reply. Didn't have a consultation as such, we met so she could do a colour match but that was it really. I asked her if the supplier had an aftercare range but she said i'd be cheaper googling hair extension shampoo and picking one. I was actually about to order X-10 so thanks for warning me. Can you recommend one? I don't have a full head so don't want anything which is going to affect my own hair as I am conditioning it with a view of growing it naturally. The ones that have come out from the root have come right out when brushing or combing my hair (with wide toothed comb) and i'm always careful not to catch the bonds.

I can feel they have started to grow out and am now wondering if I should just be getting them removed instead of topped up

the aftercare require really does depend on what hair you have fitted, ie Indian, European, whether it's branded or not again Balmain etc as most branded companies insist their aftercare is used to uphold any warranty. Although I'm assuming as she hasn't done a consultation, she doesn't have a recommended supplier as most technicians stick with a brand. I personally only use the brands recommended products. There are quite a good few threads on here regarding aftercare if you search them.

Joico so a lovely sulphate free range called smooth cure. its in an orange bottle. The full range is shampoo conditioner, smoothing balm and thermal protect spray. AMAZING on extensions. use it myself :)
