Thank you with so many out there it does get confusing :) xx

I did two courses with them, IHM and On-site. Never again!! It is shocking that you can apparently do a 1 day course and go and treat clients. I went on to do my ITEC diploma in both courses. I felt a little embarrassed to say I was qualified after a 1 day course. IMO I think we should all do courses with case studies so at least we get some practice in if nothing else.

Well I am still going to do the one in Billericay in Feb (it's all paid for anyway), if you haven't done HS course by then Emma, I will let you know how I got on. Am not going to let a few bad reports about other courses put me off :)

Make sure to let us know what you make of the course

Hello to those of you on this forum

In response to this thread my name is Sue Bailey I am the owner of Gateway Workshops. I just wanted to clarify a few things and hopefully clear up a few issues. Firstly our training manuals are included in the price of the courses and you get these fully bound and presented to you on the day of your training. We were often asked by students what A & P books we would recommend before a student attended a course, instead of you going out to buy one of the Many books available out there we decided instead to put together a free A & P manual that we could email to students as a free gift. This was then available to view on your PC at any time and put together by a senior tutor who used to work for the NHS for 22 years and taught A &P to fellow workers. We trust that this free gift is useful to students however it did not replace the course manual which is given to you hard copy on the day of your training. I do hope that clears up any confusion.

With regards to our courses we go through a very strict accreditation process were our venues, tutors and manuals are assessed we understand one day courses are an introduction and if you wish to then go and specialise and study further this is grately encouraged. Many people look to use their skills they learn with family and friends and the advanced courses we offer are for massage therapists with previous NVQ level 3 qualifications in massage and A & P looking to enhance their skills.

We specialise in small classes offering individual attention and if you feel one day is not enough for you we welcome you back to retrain with us free of charge to take the training again if required and only pass those safe after the tutor had assessed them practically on the day.

We have been established over ten years and have a fantastic knowledgable team of tutors. We recently in August 2010 got a new venue and tutor in Essex and offer a fantastic choice of courses there.

I hope my post helps as we are passionate about what we do, we also offer longer ITEC and BTEC courses in Sports massage etc over approximate 4 months training as well as the one day CPD courses

I would be happy to answer any questions anyone has with regards to our courses.

Warm wishes Sue Bailey
Gateway owner

My daughter has since done Indian head massage and pregnancy massage with Gateway. She is already nvq level 3 qualified so these were add ons and she found them to be very good, and perfectly adequate she is now able and allowed to perform the treatments in the spa where she works.
I think they are ideal when people have all the basics and just want to add to their knowledge and range of treatments. We dont all need to go over and over the same ground with long courses and spend hundreds of pounds. From my own and my daughters experience we have not been able to fault them and the trainer that we have available to us in our area is excellent.

But you knew that before you went on the courses.

Practising on people / case studies are surely what everyone does or should do if they attend a short intensive course. I would never dream of taking payment for a treatment that I had learn't without practise practise practise.

One day courses are geared towards arming you with the knowledge of how to give a safe, professional and enjoyable treatment.
But, its like anything, you need to know the routine inside out before you use it on clients.
Their will always be people who attend a short course and have clients booked in the next day, but I am sure the majority of people aren't like that.
I attend short courses frequently for pleasure, for CPD and to keep the grey matter ticking over. I get people in to practise on and then generally offer it as an introductory offer for a few weeks.
I also do a lot of research, and usually get some books/dvds off amazon to help me understand the subject at a deeper level.

Its the therapist's responsibility surely to give a professionally delivered treatment and that comes with working at it.

Make sure to let us know what you make of the course

Completely forgot to say anything LOL The Hot Stone course was amazing, the tutor was brilliant, I did feel confident after.

Did 1 last Saturday too, and again, tutor was very informative, professional and yet again I feel confident in going out to practice on others :)

Sue is a very friendly, and attentive owner, going out of her way to iron out any difficulties, and I would definitely recommend this company to others, without a doubt.

Hi, I would also like to add to this by saying I have done 2 courses with Gateway. One was Facial Rejuvenation and the other was Thai foot massage - I was already qualified to offer treatments in these areas of the body, so I viewed these as add-ons to offer my clients.

I have felt both courses were very good and informative - great teachers too. I would not have done these courses if I hadn't got previous knowledge of the therapies but I would recommend them.

Sue Bailey is very passionate about her business.

How did you get on with these 2 courses, these are on my long list to do :)

I thought they were both great. I did the face rejuvenation one about 5 years ago and I use the basic techniques of the course in my facial massage treatment.

Thai foot massage was great fun. Cathy, the tutor was excellent and we learnt a lot. It is a long day and you do take in a lot of information, but definitely worth it.

Training manuals on the day were also very informative.

I've booked in for Advanced and Deep Tissue Massage for September, spur of the moment thing, looking forward to it, agree about the manuals, very well set out I thought.

They dont do a nail course do they just mani and pedi. thats a shame.

Following on from the thread regarding learning spray tanning from a video, I do find the advent of these one day courses alarming. It is no reflection on the schools themselves - I have attended a one day Gateway course, but they do not prepare you to provide a professional treatment.

I cannot see how you can learn in one day how do give an effective deep tissue back massage, or any of the other treatments - I've seen one day courses for sports massage, indian head massage, etc.

Surely as an industry we should be aim at high standards, and this is impossible in this sort of training.

I think the problem is that they are not an introduction - they are provide a qualification

The one day IHM course requires no previous qualifications or A&P and yet after one day of training you are qualified - how can that be right?

We specialise in small classes offering individual attention and if you feel one day is not enough for you we welcome you back to retrain with us free of charge to take the training again if required and only pass those safe after the tutor had assessed them practically on the day.
Surely it should be up to the individual to decide whether they are ready or not - this is what qualifications in any profession are for - they are a measure that you have reached a required standard to provide a professional treatment.

I took a waxing course earlier on in the year with Gateway via Escape in Billericay and I can say that the course and tutor were both excellent.

I have Massage and Aromatherapy in my repertoire already, so these are add ons for me, so I have to disagree with this part of your post, sorry :) I am not going into it blindly, I've been qualified a few years now lol

I did my Hot Stones there, Sarah no longer works for Gateway and has set up on her own.

I'm not saying that these one day courses are not useful and many can benefit from learning new techniques etc. I'm not going to comment either on individual cases - I don't think it's fair or realistic.

However, my point is that you cannot learn all you need to in a day.
I have been a massage therapist for over 15 years with years of training under my belt.

My only concern is how these kinds of qualification courses reflect in our industry. I know both from an employer point of view (employing massage practitioners) as well as from feedback from clients, that quality massage therapists are a rarity - this is very say andI don't think this does our industry any good.

Hi Emma,

I have done a 4 of the 1 day courses with Gateway and found them to be really good. I did Indian Head Massage, Reiki 1 & 2, Natural lift Facial and the Advanced massage techniques. The tutors are lovely and friendly and make you feel really comfortable. I did mine in London as I live in kent but they have venues all over the country if this is not local to you
