I'm a Creative trained nail tech and disinfect & sterilise my tools & files as taught. Using Chlorispray/Mundo & Barbicide.

But, isn't it nice to think that, there are some colleges that will go the extra mile to ensure they do the job thoroughly & use the autoclave method as part of their NVQ. This can't be wrong can it, it can only instill extra cleanliness in the part of the new nail tech/manicurist.

Great thread, just brings it all back & reminds us all what we should be doing.

Ok ok this is all getting a bit out of hand.
I was replying to Kellie with the correct answers to her homework. Not as a nail tech but as a beautician.
I dont know what you nail geeks do for sterilisation but us beauticians are taught to do it in this way for manicure. Some of them may or may not do it but all i am saying to kellie is, for her homework ...these are the correct answers as she has already found out.

Hey, i recently started doing my NVQS for nails at a SACentre, I went and done a remedials course a few weeks ago as i was missing some things in order for me to complete my NVQs...anyway, while i was their the woman who was teaching me took my tools and put them in her autoclave and i asked why as i have always just disinfected them as that was what i was taught on all my previous courses,
I asked why and basically it is part of the NVQ standards that your tools be sterilized and if you dont then you wont pass your assessments and when asked in a exam ,again you have to say you would sterilize.

So, i understand completly where everyone else is coming from as i do exactly that, disinfect, BUT when it comes to doing an NVQ then you need to sterilize, i dont understand why its different but thats how it is.
Kylieb you were right in what you said as the original poster is doing her NVQ.

Thank you hun! I was starting to think i was the only one having to do this lol xxx

I completely agree with Kylie....

Metal tools should deffinately be sterilised after treatments just incase the equipment has come into contact with the clients blood without us knowing it. I understand we are not completing surgery on the client...however it is easy for the skin to bleed....we are using sharp equipment on clients at the end of the day whether we're cutting their cuticles or giving them a **** job lol

I understand its important for the client to complete consultation forms before the treatment....but do you think everyone is going to be honest or some people might not know they have a disease?

Basically...sanitisation is not enough...... i agree soft euipment like buffers should be sanitised on a regular basis as they cannot go into an autoclave.

Be too safe thats all I say! Have nothing to worry about then. I was also taught in my college to use the autoclave on a regular basis too.

Aimz:lol:

ok basically anything that is metal should be cleaned in the auto clave, after wiping with surg.
Anything that can melt or isnt strong enough for the autoclave needs to be placed in a u.v cabinet.(and turned over)
buffer- sprayed with sanitiser
cuticle knife should be put in auto clave
cuticle nippers -auto clave
scissors - auto clave
trolly- wiped with surgical spirit

Hope that helps! I also did level 1 :)

Sorry Kylie, you're not quite right but almost.
Everything should be 'cleaned' by washing with soap and water first then disinfected (an autoclave is not necessary for a nail salon)
A UV cabinet does not disinfect. It maintains a hygienic environment for disinfected tools.

If you're not convinced look at the downloads available on the Habia website (who wrote and own the National Occupational Standards) written by the Nail Manufacturers Council or read my textbook or any other recently written textbook.

Hope that helps.

Also, agreeing with other posts, this website in general does not agree with answering homework questions. This is information that colleges should provide their students with and not be a research project.
