Hi there, I run a salon from my garden. I have a friend rent a chair from me, she pays 40% of her earnings. Yes she really self employed before anyone asks. However, what I want to know is when I go on maternity leave I intend on claiming maternity allowance. Will her 40% be seen as income meaning I can’t claim maternity allowance? If this is the case I will have to close for the time I’m off as her earnings won’t cover the salon runnings and pay for me... I’m seeing my accountant next week but I’m panicking xx

No, that particular benefit is based on your class 2 NI contributions as you’re self employed and isn’t subject to means testing on your income.
