I got a few pms and thought I should revisit this post.

I think most of your questions on who needs a license can be answered here:
See what is included and excluded for PRS and ASCAP: http://www.prsformusic.com/users/bus...dalicence.aspx
ASCAP Licensing: Licensing Types

If you are unsure, it would be safe to contact your local PRO and get the answer in black and white. Payment for usages can date back from whenever you use music and you will be fined too so better be sure. I am writing in from Opuzz Royalty Free Music library and we do have some music under our nature and science - Nature / Science background music CDs. Download background music CDs or buy physical CDs. or leisure and lifestyle series - Leisure / Lifestyle background music CDs. Download background music CDs or buy physical CDs. or motivational and inspirational - Motivation / Inspiration background music CDs. Download background music CDs or buy physical CDs. that would be suitable for use in this industry. These are buyout with no expiration and completely royalty free. If you are interested, I could offer a deep discount. Otherwise if listening to the same CDs may trouble you, paying the PRO license would be the best solution but of course it would cost you infinitely more if added up over the years. Anyhow email me and I will ensure you get something that makes it worth it yet more music that you will need for years.

Hi
We run Royalty Free Music Radio an exciting new way to provide your customers with quality music and entertainment without the extra PRS/PPL fees also giving talented unsigned bands and artists an airing they wouldn’t receive from mainstream sources.

Our music is delivered on SD Cards in 4 hour segments every 2 months, all shows are hosted by professional Djs and are fully vetted before release.

Our sound equipment is the most up to date available today and ranges from a stand alone Sd Card player for smaller premises (£49.99 for player inc 4 hours of Royalty Free Music, more 4 hours at £29.99)to a 100watt Sd Card power amplifier system that can supply a range of ceiling mounted speakers. Just plug the card in and turn on, the music starts and plays on a 4 hour loop.

So for just £10 per month per store you get 6 x 4 hours (distributed throughout the year) of quality Dj hosted fresh new music and entertainment which is totally PRS/PPL fee free.

To hear a sample of what to expect please go to www.rfmradio.co.uk

One of the main advantages of our £10 a month service is that your promo adverts can be added before we distribute the SD Cards at no extra cost and so can help you with seasonal promotions etc.

I had a call from PPL a few days ago asking if I played music or had tv on. I'm a home based salon and I don't play music - they also asked if I was mobile and if I played any music at my clients houses when I went mobile!
You do need a licence if you play music - I don't so its not an issue, but its something to consider when first setting up cos its ALOT of money!!

I had a similar call last week from a really rude, arrogant man representing PPL. For a start he'd called three times using a blocked number and not left a message - that really winds me up! Then he basically said "You don't have a licence. You're breaking the law."

I'm mobile and don't play any music anywhere, so I know I'm not breaking any rules but his attitude was something else. He said he'd send a form so I can "declare" that I don't play music - haven't received anything yet.

Of course musicians/songwriters etc should get royalties but I don't expect to be treated like a lawbreaker when I pick up the phone!

Hi

Just to stir things up a bit I thought you should know that you will also require an additional ProDub license if you are playing music from an iPod, MP3 player or even your own CD compilation!
See here:
ProDub Licence

My daughter runs keep fit and dance classes and has found it necessary to be covered by ALL 3 licenses just to run her business, one big con by the music moguls in my opinion. It's not as if their music is cheap to buy in the first place.

I have the royalty free music from Vivian at Opuzz.com. Its great.

ello,

who do i have to call for a PRL and a PPL license? My local council? And can i ring and pay over the phone, and then im covered? Or do i have to wait for the certificate to come through before i can play music in the salon?

Thanks!

There is always some hiden cost somewhere. I work from home and don't see why you should have to pay to play music to you client's. Where exactly is the moeny going to,,,, I play a meditation cd does it go to them??????????

They'll be making to pay for having a party in your own home if you have people round,,,,,,, what next,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

I'm really sorry but this won't work either as you need a licence to play the music as well as the performer. The only way around it is to find royalty free music and get a certificate, to prove it, from the song writer and performer (usually the same person)

im sorry but you are wrong. i have just found out this week that we have been playing music illegally in both our salons. we have always had a prs license but someone phoned up the other day and told me that we needed a ppl license too. i hate the beaurocracy of it all. the performers and song writters and all the others in between use the radio as a platform to launch any new songs for them to be heard and then sold in their thousands in the shops to hopefully get no.1. i am currently looking to install a fulll music system to run off the salon computer. download all the music i need that is royalty free and stick 2 fingures up at them all. the reason i know you are wrong is because i challenged them on the phone. the prs gentleman told me that i would have to show a certificate. wrong!! you see they must have a comprtehensive list of all there artists that are due royalties(how else do they pay the right people) and if your cd that is royalty free is not on that list then you do not have to pay.

please do not forget that you are inocent until proven guilty. they have to prove that you are playing music that has royalties due no you proving to them that there is none due. also please do not bow to these greedy sh***. they do not deserve our money. music should be free

How funny i was just reading this thread this morning and low and behold what did the post man bring me??.... nothing but a letter from prs.
I do not play any form of music as i am mobile and go to my clients houses and leave it up to them if they want to put there own music on. I know i find it more relaxing to put my own personal choice of music on whilst relaxing. Also my idea of relaxing music isnt always their idea of relaxing music.

I also got a letter today but they can 'do one' as I only play royalty free music and have the certificate for it.
The letter didn't even look very official, more like a marketing letter.
