hi

dont write very often, but would appreciate some advice. i recently opened a new salon and it has been very successful even in this climate, i am quite well known in area have been in industry for 16 years.

recently i had a visit from the council that a client has been smoking in an area which was not allowed, had spoken to police friend and she felt that the area was ok. anyway was told that i anm having visit from health and safety officer, because of nail fumes, i am only tech in my salon, have extraction unit on desk, and follow all procedures as far as keepig fumes to minimum. kitchen and toilet facilities not finished yet.
anyway seems recession bringing worst out in people. cant get kitchen and toilet finished for another two weeks. any advice

xx

I didn't know council health and safety would visit due to health fumes? Is someone jealous that you're doing well?

Have you got no smoking signs up?

I know that for an are to be ok to smoke in must be open on at least three sides. If this isnt the case then just humbly apologise stick a sign up and get a slapped wrist, doubt they can do anything on this. Its a fairly new law and one they struggle to enforce.

With regards to the fumes if you have extraction they cant do poop! Just quickly knock up your own health and safety report that technically we all should have (but probably rarely do). Just so that they know you know what the jealth and safety areas are and that you follow them weekly.

Also make sure your fire escape routes listed with required hydrants and you will be fine.

If there intent on telling you off, just be nice go, 'oh I really didnt know that, but I appreciate all your advice to help make my shop a safer place for myself and clients'! A bit of brown nosing has never hurt any of us.

I certainly wouldn worry though. The worst they can is slap your wrist and if you then keep ignoring their advice thats when they get upset.

say - yes, no, how many sugars would you like etc, then tell them that 'it is a work in progress' and when complete you will invite them back, and leave it for them to come back when they want. If you create the impression you are on the ball they will leave you alone. I had a visit because a customer complained we had no heating on ???? (Like i am going to let my customers freeze) and i told the h&s people that we had recently bought the salon and that they couldn't inspect the COSHH regs, H&S manual etc as we didn't think the old one was relevant and we were in the throws of updating it to make it relevant and they asked to walk round which i let them do, they found no issues - especially with the blazing radiators and they said for me to call them when i had the policies done.
