Hi all,

I'm currently working full time in an unrelated field with no beauty training but I'm naturally artistic and passionate about the beauty industry.

I am struggling to know whether it is best to do an NVQ Level 2 night course which covers the basics, or whether I should go straight into separate courses that I have the most interest such as Lash Technician, HD Brows, Gel Mani/Pedi and eventually Microblading, Dermaplaning etc..

I have no interest in working for a salon and would prefer to be mobile or rent a room at a salon, so I wondered if it would be a waste of money completing NVQ 2 only to then have to do the add on lash extension courses/ HD brows etc.. anyway? From what I can see the only time an NVQ is required is if I were to apply for a job working for a salon. Is that right?

Any help really appreciated :)

Many thanks,

Liza

I have recently had a major career change, been an engineer for 11 years. But took interest in beauty and started doing intense courses on holidays and leave just out of interest and a hobby. Found it so relaxing and enjoyable I built up these courses. I am now self employed running my own little beauty room.
If there are specific courses on the nvq you want to do I.e reflexology or Indian head massage (these are two I am looking into) then you can apply for the course on those specific treatments rather than the whole course.
But like you stated I don't think you could work in a salon. Spas are accepting of this though.

I would personally go for an NVQ. In some areas in the country you are unable to open your own premises without a minimum level 2 qualification and this looks like it's spreading. It started in London initially but now includes other areas.

I agree with Vic on this one. You'd be covering yourself for the future if you hold a minimum NVQ level 2 or equivalent.

At the moment only a limited number of councils require you to apply for a special treatment licence to carry out beauty treatments but as it's essentially an easy money making scheme for councils, it's likely to expand throughout the country in a short space of time.

What do you mean??? You always agree with me [emoji23]

To the OP. I would also add that even though you don't want to work in a salon right now, who knows what the future holds? My part timer has a home salon and does two days a week for me. She loves the variety. Just a thought.
