So, I’m now employed in a salon, I love it, I’m good at it, but in a couple of years I’ll be moving out and I cant live on this wage. I was looking at other jobs but it just didn’t feel right, all the parts I enjoy of my job now, are the things I’d be doing as a business owner, so my mum and sister and boyfriend are adamant I should open my own salon.

I love the idea of it, but I’m so scared to not have that regular wage, I work in a small town, and people just don’t seem willing to pay for their hair anymore. Can anyone with their own salon give me some advice?? Should I take the risk and do it? If so what tips do I need. Or will I regret it

Going solo requires a decent chunk of money to sustain you for 6-12 months while you build the business.

First of all, it is a great risk. But this risk can be so rewarding, if you do it smartly.

There is one constant thing in our lives: our hair grows, and we need to cut it :)
The advantage of having your own salon, is that you can build the businesses exactly how you want it: the interior design, the services, the customers, it is all in your hands.
Pay big attention to marketing even before you open the salon. Actually that’s a good way to test the demand. Share in social media your vision, share your knowledge, reach to people, and see their reaction. Ask what they would want to see in a new beauty salon, what services they would want. This communication will help you avoid lots of mistakes.
Go to events and do the same - talk to people!

Test your idea, your market, and then you will know if you’re ready to take the risk.
