I was reading the scratch mag the other day and it was saying how,I think it was Leighton Denny, files over his client toe nails to get any of the ridges out before applying his polish.

Do any of you geeks do this before you go on to polish??:)What do you think of this?

i don't but would be interested to see if anyone does, i suppose the light file side of a buffing block could do the job x

I use my Koala buffer to lightly buff the nails, especially the big toe nail and would buff a little more if the nail was thicker and had ridges on. The Koala buffer being 240 grit. I don't go mad or try and remove all the ridges.. just do a little more than I would do in general prep on the hands natural nails.

Do you buff the toe nails Babs?

I have also lighly buffed the toe nails on occasion when performing a pedi. Especially if they are very ridged.

I have gently on clients that need it but have never routinely done it and wondered if geeks did as part of their routine.Toes do look better though, imo with a gentle buff first.

Yep, I buff toenails. They are usually much thicker than fingernails, so shouldn't do much harm. It gives a much better result and the polish looks shinier.

I will buff thicker toe nails but not all of them as imo some just dont need it!

if they need it (most dont) i'll do it !

Toenails are way more robust than fingernails imho

when i do this service - i do itend to treat the toe nails as if they are finger nail, and yes i do buff over the nails

personally i buff all the nails in a pedi and mani it leaves a flawless smoother surface this is always a part of my nail services

on the rare occasion i did do pedi's on other people , yes i did buff them ,
mainly only the big toenail ,
but i always do it on my own it gives a smoother application imo

Yes I do buff, especially if the nails have ridges or are slightly thick, doing it lightly shouldn't harm the nail & gives a better overall finished look! :)

Sometimes I use 180 grit on the big toe nails if they are badly stained or have that whitish tinge to them, is this too harsh? I am lightly going across them as the 240 grit seems to do nothing on some people's toes.

This buffing i gather you are meaning before the polish goes on plz?

I file over mainly big toes, and oil buff them so that the nails are nice and smooth.

i buff aswell gives much better finish.

Me too.
If there is discolouration I might be a little harder on them (only a little!)
I have a client with thick discoloured toenails. If I gently buffed them, they would still be discoloured and there is no-way he would rebook me! I want my clients to look down and not recognise their own feet (that's the point isn't it?).
Most peoples toenails could do with a buff imo. Some people need a bit more. Some people have lovely smooth toenails, so buffing isn't neccessary.

I think it is important to perform each treatment for the individual - not routine (if that makes sense?) Remember that they are placing their trust in us as professionals; And only we are responsible for our actions - If in doubt, don't do it.

Most people neglect their feet so much and so many people have so much cuticle, etc, on the whole of their toenails. For these people, I ususally buff the toenails, often just the big toenails, with a high grit file or a white block after doing the cuticle work to give a smoother finish.

i only buff with a soft file if the client has particulalry ridged toenails as it makes the polish smoother, but i don't usually do it as part of my routine.

The majority of times I have buffed toe nails before I polish. The ones I've done tended to be very neglected so buffing gave them a smoother finish.

As Amber said, you dont have to buff it its not necessary.
