Hey there,

I am doing a bit of training in hairdressing over the next year and i am wondering before i start as i cant get it out of my head and i cant wait until May to ask a tutor.

Why are so many red hair dyes orange based and are there any that arent orange based?

You have undertones in each and every colour. When you was in primary school you played with paint, and red is a primary colour, but to darken red you add green, and to lighten red you add orange, so there is your answer, for a lighter red it has a orange undertone, to darken red it has a green undertone :)

Hey all, :green:

I was speaking to a friend a while ago about red hair dyes and she said alot are based orange.
I am training later in the year and just have a question before i start as its been in my head for ages and i cant wait until i go to do it. :irked:

Why are most hair dyes based orange an are there any that arent?

The reason is becuase some reds are darker than others. If you want dark red you add green to darken, if you want lighter red you add orange. A lot of people wanted bright red last year so most were a undetone of orange.

To neutralise red you add green, not to darken it?

Let's start at neutral, call it 0 now this isn't the correct colour numbers, but works to explain this. Minus numbers are cool and plus numbers are warm. So at 0 we have -1 green, -2 dark green, -3 greny blue, -4 blue, - 5 blue violet, -5 violet
Then we have te warms, so +1 is yellow, +2 orangey yellow, +3 orange +4 redish orange, +5 red, +6 violet red, +7 violet, which is where as a circle it would meet violet again, which is why reds look good with orange and some with violet even though violet is classed as cool not warm.

But for more understanding you need to find a hairdressing colour wheel. To gettin any of the colours from 0 the numbers up to it are present, 0 has non of these colours xoxo

Do you mean alot of reds have alot of copper in, then yes i agree my colour range /4 which is red ,looks copper on colour swatch and results in a red/copper shade. I like fudge for the reds they are a true red, no copper tones.:green:
