Hi i was just wondering if anyone can help me pleaseee ...
Im a registered self employed nail tech, i work out of a salon on a comission basis and the owner provides products and deducts from my commision an amount off of each service (based on what service im doing). Does this mean that what i take home is my gross income or net.... for example what she deducts from me for products can i claim that back when i do my tax?
I feel so confused ahhhhhhh

She shouldn't be deducting. You should be taking the money and then paying her percentage :)

Sorry, simple question, but why? I was working the same for years ( only being paid my commission ) it seemed to save the faff of transferring money backwards and forwards.

Because it's illegal 'technically'. If the salon/business you're in is collecting the money that should be going on their turnover which is wrong as it's not their income, it's yours as it's your customer and your business.

No matter if you pay a commission or flat rent, the business you're inside is merely a landlord/landlady. They can't dictate how you deal with clients, hours you work or get involved with your bookings/clients and payments.

HMRC would probably class it as a potential sham employment if they ever found out and they may consider you employed.
