Should wheelchair users get priority over a baby in a pushchair?

Person in the wheel chair of course always a priority, you have a choice to have a baby, simply can't believe this was even open for discussion!!!

What !!!

Why read it if you didnt like the title of the content ?

I suppose you could allways put your baby in the carry car seats?
Im sure you get new buggys that these can fit on the buggy and in the car or be carried. That would be a good option for those that need to use public transport a lot. That way, you could fold down your buggy and baby would still be safe in its car seat.

If you have 10 pairs of hands lol! x

I think someone who's good at wording should start a petition and send it to the dept of transport !

It's all private bus companies now though. And I don't think that the DDA (Disability Discrimination Act) applies to public transport until 2012 or something like that.

Is it any wonder there are so many cars on the road (given that public transport is so much hassle)? Although it is always a joy to commute during the school holidays, owing to the absence of the school run clogging the roads up...

and yet you chose to discuss it!!!!

I can't believe people discuss a discussion they don't want to discuss...

Hmm this discussion occasionally gets a bit out of hand.

The way i see it as, does it matter who has priority? There will never be signs of priority on buses anyway its upto people disgression as to who they think should have priority. I think this will just get peoples backs up on both sides.

Yep, and by Sonia and I vowing never to travel by bus with her wheelchair again, I'm going to quote the Dragons on Dragons' Den by saying "I'm Out"!!!

Thats such a shame Ruth, I think buses should really accommodate both wheelchair users and prams so there is enough space.
But then again we know the government can be utterly arrogant with some things.

No, just ruthlessly inefficient, and pandering to the clout of all those private bus companies by delaying introducing the DDA (Disability Discrimination Act) on public transport for so long...

At least there will be a nice lot of inaccessible buses to turn into hippy wagons in a few years ;)

There is no reason to get peoples backs up...it's been on the whole a healthy discussion minus a few and it shows both sides of a coin.

I think we get very Politically Correct sometimes and lose sight of things.

Of course we should thank our lucky stars that there are those of us who are fortunate to have fully functioning legs or indeed anything else....
I thank my lucky stars numerous times that I can indeed do many things that someone who has a disability cannot do.

Yes we choose to have children and I thank my lucky stars...and stripes...that I am able to have children because there are many, many people who are unable to have them.

But the question wasn't so bloody dramatic that anyone should get on their high horse about it!!!! except me who has got on her high horse about those on their high horses

Everyone has the right to be on a bus...the pushchairs and babies...the wheelchair users...the punk teenager...the pensioner...the schoolkids...

If I was at a bus stop and it was me with my baby and pushchair and a person in a wheelchair behind me...yes I would let the wheelchair user before me...

if I then wasn't able to get on the bus...then I would be seriously ticked off!!!!

If I was on the bus with my newborn baby sleeping safely in it's pushchair all strapped in and then made to take the baby out because the pushchair had to be put down to make way for the wheelchair...then yes I would be ticked off about that too...
If I had got on the bus first...maybe I was only a few stops from my journey...yes I would be fuming about having to put my pushchair down!!!!

I would do it though...because that's me...but I don't think I should have to do it...and it wouldn't make me not annoyed by the situation...but that wouldn't mean I had personal issues with the wheelchair user or indeed think any less of them or any other Politically Correct nonsense...I would just be ticked off there wasn't more room on the bus!!!!

and that is basically what the person who started the thread was on about...we ALL have rights...
the thread wasn't started saying Down With the Wheelchairs

Your right there is no reason for people to get backs up what so ever.

But some people can discuss topics like this and some just cant! They would rather throw out sarcastic comments.

Well each to their own I suppose...

but at least there was someone who could give us a great insight into this topic aka Ruth to name one....

and there's nowt better than a good old discussion...

hi not been on a while
it was not 'i hate pushchair rant' which maybe some took it to be although not sure why.
im lucky enough not to use a wheelchair since a kid but im sure everyone knows someone who does.

yes a wheelchair does need the space more then a pushchair..
but i still think the age of the child makes a difference as i wouldnt take a very young/newborn baby out

but yes id take an older child out
and yes id take out my child he 17 months, has a little flip down buggy that takes a second to fold and is no hassle whatsoever for me to fold and let someone else have the space.

AND id fold it for a new born baby who in my opinion needs the space more then him also.

i do see people with 2 year olds who act like the world is falling down just to fold down the pram and that i dont agree with.

people like ruth shouldnt have to avoid buses altogether because the space on the buses can only be for one or the other.
i was on the bus once when a wheelchair and 1 small buggy managed to fit in as the space was slightly bigger i dont know why it is not like that in all buses.

'runs and hides in corner'

tell you what is annoying, when people take an unfolded pushchair on and then the kid sits on a seat as well. like they want 2 spaces !

But that's not as bad as when you're standing on a train, yet someone thinks that their bag deserves a seat more than you!!! :green:

Ha ha, well done you!

Would have been mortified if you'd hurt a small dog in there though!!!

I was going to say sit on the bag but what if it was a Paris Hilton type of bag with a little dog inside

In Spain they don't put their bags on floors...and in certain South American countries it's bad luck to put a bag on the ground...so all their bags go on chairs!!!!!

When I went to see my daughter in hospital we all stood about while the one and only chair contained everyone's bags :irked: ( South American in-laws )

Gone wayyyyyyyyyy off topic there....

I think it's wrong to assume that because someone looks healthy, that they are healthy. They could have Cancer, a heart condition, lung condition anything.

Aye, the "hidden disabilities" like the person I knew who was shot and had to have a colostomy. You're so right there, Kim. Cancer, heart conditions, lung conditions, early-stage MS, ME, etc, could mean that people might appear to be able to walk OK for a short distance, but could end up exhausted pretty quickly... it's so dangerous to assume!

i agree with that you dont really know some things can be hidden or not as noticeable
