Hi everyone im posted this thread as im hoping you fellow salon geeks can advise me on saying the 'right thing' lol The thing is ive been voted 'Woman Of The Year' in our local slimming club for other members in class for loosing 3 and half stone in total. As a reward my slimming consultant is arranging a 'special day' for me to have a makeover hair and makeup at a salon and to borrow an outfit for the day as press will be invited to take photos for our local newspaper. The other business are doing it complimentary as they will be getting free promotion out of it.
However ive recently opened my own salon and although i dont do makeup so it would be nice to be a client for a day lol i am a skin/beauty therapist and i cant help but think its a great oppportunity for me to mention what i do, as i havent had an editorial or any advertising like that and feel my business can really do with a boost especially with the way things are now. I know sometimes they do ask your occupation but dont want to be cheeky as i know its really for the other business so when they call me tomorrow i want to somehow drop it in conversation maybe in relation to my weight loss is this posibble lol? or do u fink i should let it go?
any ideas on what i could say?
it has given me the confidence to open my own place and be a more confident and happier person but if i mention that i dont want people to think i wast confident in treatments.

thankyou for reading this looking foreard to your replies

First of all...massive congratulations
and welcome to the site xx

I think it would perfectly acceptable for you to mention your own business...

And I totally understand what you mean..I am not a confident person (with myself) yet am very confident with my nail skills (some won't believe me there lol)

Sometimes the two get crossed over and it becomes a pain in the butt...
Sometimes I am my own worsed enemy..
Yet I know for sure, If I had more confidence in myself...my business would flourish from there..

Go for it hun...with all this new confidence, you need to let it help you..
You will regret it if you keep quiet...you will be buzzing if you do what it is you really want to and talk about it...

The majority of women who will read the artic;e
will totally understand what you mean, and I am sure they wont read it as you are not confident in business....
They will probably be looking to you as an inspiration and a success story xxx

As a Slimming World Member since May 2008 - can I just say a massive congratulations to you for your terrific weight loss.
That's an astonishing amount of weight to lose and I take my hat off to you babes - blooming well done
xxxxxxxx

I have so far since last may 2008 lost 4 stone and a half pound! Still got another 4 stone to go to get to my target and I know how hard it is, so I do understand how much hard work & effort you've put in....which means

You've done that - why can't you shout about your biz too! I know I would - go for it & enjoy it too, it's your own hard work & determination that's got you to this, so push yourself out there and promote yourself & your biz at the same time.
You'll probably find people will be more likely to come to you than to sosmewhere they feel 'uncomfortable' iykwim:hug:
Good for you!

Well done you. Was just thinking about joining SW myself.

When they asked you why you lost weight, you could say that since opening your own salon, you have been surrounded by gorgeous looking women and it inspired you to lose weight as you wanted to set a good example. I'm sure there's truth in that and they love a good story. Bit of sob and ending with the glory. Good luck. xx

well done Emma Lee! you could also say that now you have lost the weight it is easier to do your job, as being a beauty therapist can be physically demanding and quite tiring doing waxing and massages etc etc and now you have so much more energy. Yes definitely promote yourself and your business, you deserve it!

I can't take credit for this quote (I saw it on a TV show) but I still thought it was good:

"What do we do if we're not strong enough?"
"We act as if we are."

Same thing applies here imo. Remember that you're providing a service to them that they're not paying you for--your testimonial and appearing in all of this stuff is free advertising for them (and valuable advertising at that)! Not to mention I'd assume you pay to be a member of their program. (Someone remind me to figure out how to get people to pay me to let them advertise for me ;) )

Don't be at all afraid to ask for a mention of your business. The worst they can do is say no, but it could really help to springboard you and frankly, it's the least they can do. And as for the quote above--if you're not confident about something, think about what a confident person WOULD do, and then do that. Works for me (and I can be pretty shy).

thankyou everyoneit has been really hard work sometimes you read in magazines where people do it in a few months mine has been a long journey but i was determined not to give up.
Well done to you Bev-rose thats a great achievement 4stone keep up the great work slimming world is such a great healthy eating plan that it soon becomes a way of life.
i remember when i first wanted to train as a beauty therapist after i left school i was worried that i would attend college and be bullied their too especially seen as we'd have to get change in body treatments and waxing but was suprised that it wasnt like in school and everyone was more mature and nice about it. also that you are covered during treatments so i do understand where other self concious clients are coming from because sometimes i use to feel intimated going into a salon where a skinnier and younger therapist looks down at you, you need to made to feel relaxed.

Well done on your fabulous weight loss hun, you must be so proud of yourself! As for what to say, I think you already said it pretty well in your post above - you could use this angle when they ask about your weight loss and point out that you are a caring therapist that has first hand experience of some of the issues that larger ladies face when going to a salon.

Good luck and do come back and let us all know how it goes.

You definetly should promote your business as the confidence you have gained to keep going with the weight loss is in ALL area's of your life. When they do the story on you say "it gave me MASSIVE confidence to open my own place" and plug yourself from there. Cant anyone in your salon do the make up? - I'd rather they did everything in my place.

Congratulations and just enjoy every moment...you deserve it

As for promoting your salon...why not? as the others have said you should.

Like Kim, I was thinking of SW...what do you reckon Kim?
