Hi! I was wandering around the internet this evening, had trouble going to sleep :), and getting through a hundred links came upon Steiner. Has anyone heard of them or had any experience with them? They operate spas on cruise ships all over the world, recruiting Stylists, Fitness Instructors, Beauty Therapists, Nail Techs, Massage Therapists and Acupuncturists.
It seems nice, you get to travel, the money is supposed to be great! Of course you have to work your behind off :) but you know- no pain no gain.. There's a 9 month contract and for that time you don't get to go home at all so that bit is bugging me a little, but other than that all seems to be good.
So anyway, just wondering if anyone has any experience with them or has heard something about them... :)

Hi Hun,
If I was much younger, single & no children I would work on cruise lines. Yes you do work hard, but the rewards are fab. Just imagine the places you will see, and all the different clients you will meet.....Go for it.
We love to cruise for our holidays........it is just fantastic.......I have told my son when he is old enough to try working on the cruises for a few years. I think you have to be 21yrs old.
A friend of mine went on one ..just for 6 months as a jeweller......that was 3 years ago, she keeps re newing her contract.......she just loves it.
Lotsa luv x  x

You need to be 18 with Steiner. I looked at working on cruise ships for a while, even went as far as sending off my application. The only reason I changed my mind was being away from people I care about for 6-9months at a time.

I agree with Poshfloss on this one...if you have no commitments/kids etc and can handle the minimum time away from friends and family then go for it. I can imagine the first 9 months going by so quick that before you know it you'll be back home...and you never know, you might be itching to sign up your next contract. I'd say go for it

Hi
I worked for Steiner back in 1999 as a Beauty Therapist.
Saved £5000 in 9 months, saw the world, made some great friends, ship life was great socially.
Do be prepared to work 12hr days, host demonstrations and talks, sell sell sell!! You have targets to reach retail wise and your Salon Manager will be on your back constantly to reach it.
It will completely change you though, the training is second to none, I became a more confident person/Therapist through it. Yes 9 months is a long time to be away from home friends & family but hey..........you only live once. Do it whilst you've got no commitments
Good luck!!
Michelle xx

I have just taken my son today to Watford to the steiner acadamy, (few tears from me, but he so ready to go) he is going to be a barber on ship and his contract will be nine months.

He will be training for 2/4 weeks then join the ship. His best mate is a fitness instructor and is on his 3rd cruise. He loves it, its extremely hard work, very long days. However, the rewards are huge, he has seen many different countries and is only 21. Has gained so much experience and communication skills as well as saving hard. There are targets to be met, and you have to sell well to get your comission. Its a fantastic opportunity, go for it xxx

My daughter has got a job with Steiner and she starts at the academy in October with her cruise placement early November...( she has to fly to L.A!!! )

You need to be 18 for Beauty/Massage therapists I know that....some other professions might require you to be older....

The only thing is you do need some money behind you...hence my daughter asked to start later this year in order to earn some money first.....

There is a lot you have to pay up front for ( crewman visas/medicals/uniforms etc etc ) and she has been told to set aside £1000/€1000....

You need money for the academy too because that can be a few weeks and you pay for your own transport/food etc...( the YMCA you stay at is paid for you )

Hotels/transport costs when getting to the cruise has to be paid by yourself too...anything over €100 ( I think! ) is recovered from your spa manager....

But the pay is supposed to be superb although it is mainly commission based and I think you have to sell hard....the academy is mainly about selling the products ( Elemis ) which luckily my daughter trained with....

She has heard nothing but glowing reports about Steiner and 'cruise' life...and although 9 months is a long time...if you decide to return to ship your next contract can be shorter...i.e 6 months...

It is a great way to earn and save money for a few years and see the world in the meantime....

Good luck xxxxxxxxxxxx

If were young free and single I'd do this in a shot !! I have a great tech friend who I did alot of my training with who is sailing off the coast of new zeland at this moment and is having a ball !! (ladypinkj on this site drop her a pm to ask how she finds it xx) and she is working on a steiner boat xxx enjoy and grap the opp !!

I think its a great thing to do, as said, you get to save your money, see all those places etc, I had a friend who did the cruise ships for 5 years as a hair dresser. She said the best bit was, because she saw all those places while she was working she spent her shore time doing courses to top up her skills.
Last thing, I always used to say to my engineers when they were thinking about contracts to places like Hong kong.
Image you are old and sat in front of the fire, do you want to be staring into your fire thinking about all the things you didn't do?
Or do you want your photo's out and a smile on your face remembering all the wonderful crazy things you did do?

Just spotted the date this thread started lol Did you go for it?

My biggest regret in life is not going on the cruises - I was young and fell in love which didn't last.

I often wonder what would have happened if I'd gone on the liners. If I was in my 20s and had no commitments I'd be away like a shot.

My main reason for doing beauty back then was to travel with it, which i didn't do :(

I would like to have worked on the cruises but after looking into it a bit further I got put off ! lol

Like mercedes said there was quite a bit of money needed upfront and I remember there being something about not being able to take your car to the training ? Or the hostel ? Can't quite remember but there were so many little things that put me off. One of them being if you have coloured hair then you were NOT allowed to have roots on show, well when my hair was blonde I would of needed the roots doing every week in that case !!

I think if its something you REALLY want to do then those things don't matter but I am so fussy I think id of spent the whole time moaning about anything & everything !

Having said that everyone I have ever met that has worked on cruise ships loved it so it probably is just me being super fussy !

Most jobs give you training and uniform for free and a wage rather than a commission based wage and don't lock you into a nine month contract. Sounds like a lot of sacrifices to travel the world working yourself to the bone! I am sure it suits some people but it wouldn't be for me. I'd rather travel as a guest!

The training is for free....
The uniform you buy for the academy is yours to keep so that isn't too bad....
I cannot remember if you have to buy the uniform for the ship too...or if it is the same one from the academy...that is eluding me right now....

As for being commission based....that has only recently changed....
You do get a basic wage...just incase you are incapable of selling I guess....but it is supposed to work out the same as when you got a salary... plus there are tips of course which can amount to quite a lot.

I think the biggest thing...in my daughters case anyway....is the experience...
she was actually offered the job while she was still 17 ( knowing she would be 18 when she started of course! ). She has no ties....no boyfriend....but a chance to further her horizons while she has the chance...
She has to fly to L.A then the ship she is on will be calling at Jamaica, Mexico and suchlike....
She has a chance to further her experience in the industry...meet many varied people...and visit countries she might never have had the chance otherwise....and earn money....

all the while her friends are still at school and not knowing what they want to do in life.....

I think for someone young, free and single it is great....

But it wouldn't have done for me...I hate boats and have terrible sea-sickness....luxury or not.....

My son is at the Steiner acadamy now, he is enjoying it so far, lots of hard work and very long hours,James is doing barbering. They stay at the ymca in Watford whilst doing their training and travel to the acadamy every day, he could be there between 2 and 4 weeks. He will not know which ship he will be on until the end of training as they assess your personality, skills as to which ship will suit you best.

His best mate is doing fitness on his 3rd ship, and flew to Melbourne last week. He has been to many different countries and is only 21. He is away from home for 9 months and back home for 3.

He had to have £1000 in his bank account before he went as there are many things to pay out for, norwegian medical, uniform, airflight tax, maritime fee, crb checks, visa,. His contract will be nine months.

Its a fantastic opportunity to see the world, meeting people from all over the world and gain life experience with excellent training. The hours on ship are very long and your wages come from commission. You have to know Elemis products inside out.

It is something he had thought about for a couple of years, and his girlfriend who is a hairdresser also wanted to apply but you are not allowed to be on the same ship as your friends/girlfriends or partner. James wanted to be completely sure (he is 20) as it is a long time to be away from friends and family (and dont I know it already:cry:) but he is fine and cant wait to get to ship.
